My fiance and I have been together for 9 months now and only engaged for 4 months of that time and we desparately want to get married next August, but there is some opposition from family. I am still a college student, and he works and they would like me to wait 3 years until I graduate from college...what should I do? Do I do what I want even thought it will upset my family? I know they will support me no matter which I choose but will still be upset w/ me. What should I do?

dear member,
i dont know if my story will help or not. i tried to get advice just like you before i got married. i too am still in college and only 18. i knew my husband for 5 months and we wanted to get married. since my family and i are very close i talked with them and they all said i am too young, that they really like the guy i wanted to married but said i should wait at least until i get my degree. i love and respect my family but knew jon my husband was the one and that it was time. i didnt really have an engagement but we got married a month after we told my family. since dec. 31st 03 things have been so wonderful. my mother and i had a discussion just the other day and she said she is so proud that i did what i wanted too. she said the reason she said wait til im done with college is because when most people get married they end their school years and dont go back. i finished my break with school and registered with my husband for spring quarter. we are now within a 1/2 a year of getting our degree. if you do decide to get married your parents will still be there for you. they know your smart and probably want the best for you. just continue going to school, work, and dont have kids for like 5 years. as soon as you get married youll find out your time with your husband is precious and youll want to enjoy that for awhile. my husband and i have been happily married for almost 4 months, live in a really cute apartment that our family helped us with so much, have no kids, continue working and going to school full time. good luck with your husband, family, and school. -selena
