My girlfriend and I are in our early 40's and we have both been married twice. We have only known each other for a short time, but we feel very close and click on almost everything. We have not had sex with each other and we have just recently told each other we love each other. We decided that we would not have sex until we are married. It is something that we have talked about a lot, and both of us feel strongly about the topic.

My question is to everyone out there… is it an unrealistic idea to hold out until marriage?
We think it is so romantic!

I think it would be a great idea to save sex until marraige. If you can do that, that is. It is not ideal in today's society to hold out.

My personal opinion though is that it would help build a strong relationship. I think that when you through sex into a relationship it changes the relationship totally. I think that if you can hold out until marraige it will benefit you. That way you are able to get to know your significant other and build a relationship on emotions and trust and love.

Then when you know you are compatible in that aspect then you can through in the sex for added fun...

There are different views on sex before marriage. I’m of the opinion that sexual compatibility is about more than fitting peg A into slot B and that sexual compatibility is too important to gamble on by waiting until marriage.
But, I’m not saying that it is not a smart move for you two.
I think what is important regardless of the variety of views on this topic is that you two do not rush into marriage BECAUSE you are anxious to have sex with one another. That desire is very natural and I think lots of people who hold out until marriage get married before they address all of the other crucial issues that arise in marriage. Don’t let your hormones keep you from building a strong relationship. Sex drive can overshadow other potential problems. You don’t want a third divorce!
