Under Glass

For once I held my love in hand
Clasped her tightly to my chest
Stared deeply beyond the threat of morrow
And swore to all I’d never rest.

And cleave to me my love did tightly
While wishes moved from myth to true
The life of life moved ever faster
As my love for love beyond me grew

No longer could I hold love in hand
No longer could I myself contain
That which bound me to another
That which words could not explain

Yet guard I must and defend it still
Before it stretched beyond my grasp
I took that love and brutally bent it
And nestled it tightly in a box of glass

On display for the world’s eyes to see
I carried it proudly from here to there
Always touting my precious bounty
An effortless task with never a care

So light the load, I need never look
Inside the box where love did rest
All the while I smiled proudly
Certain my love adored its nest

Yet under glass its vines had withered
The light outside failed at its walls
Screaming in darkness without a sound
My ears grew deaf to its pleading calls

All at once with the fury of lightning
Shattered shards pierced a silent dawn
My bloody hands cradled tears of yearning
Unleashed was the pain of love withdrawn
