Believe N God-
I too am thinking about adding fasting to my prayer life in order to get closer to God. I'm not an expert in this area, but have some suggestions that may help you.
Although fasting from food is what people mainly fast from, I don't think it's a law that your fast has to be from food. It could be from anything that you spend a lot of time doing. For instance, I think for me, I should fast from the television because I spend many hours in front of the tv. If I prayed and studied my Bible during this time I'm sure my relationship with my Father would be strengthened.
If this will be your first time fasting, take it slow. If you decide to fast from food, you might try fasting from choice foods like sweets or meats first. Fast for one or two meals first then gradually move into fasting for the whole day.
Also, make sure your motive for the fast is right. Don't fast just to get an answer from God but fast to draw you closer to Him so you can hear His voice when He does answer.
Whatever you decide to fast from be sure to spend that time in prayer, Bible study, and meditation.
Please let us know how it goes.

Roxy

I used to fast regularly, not eat, just drink liquids....I mainly did this on Sundays, since I was already deeply into conversations w/God on that day.
I would drink only, no solid food, from the time I got up until the next morning. Yes, you are hungry, but drink a lot of water (other clear liquids, too are OK, but I stuck mostly to water, as to allow God to "cleanse" my body as well as my spirit).
Other fasts may be from sundown, until sundown the next day. This didn't work for me, as it didn't feel like I had "missed" anything, and I would GORGE before the fast, and then afterward. The whole "spiritual" idea of a fast is to be "weakened" to the point of leaning on God for your strength during the time you are refusing food.
I have only fasted once since H left, as I felt I needed to really know that I was listening and heard God for His will in this situation....I was thinking of another fast, but now going back to work, it will have to be on a Sat. or Sun. Maybe I'll go back to my Sunday fasts?
Anyway, that is all I did, very simple, and not a lot of danger of harming yourself in any way....I wouldn't fast for more than 3 days (although there is a "method" for 7-day fast), because I think most of us have TOO MUCH reponsibility to abstain from food for that long, and still function correctly everyday. On our emotional rollercoaster, I would be afraid of wearing myself down too much.
Maybe we should all agree on a "Day of Fasting" and fast and pray for each other all at the same time?
Let me know what you think of that idea.
Lupo

Lupolady-
I think this is a wonderful idea. Count me in. We just have to decide on a day. After all, we're all in this together. This is what the Bible talks about when it says bearing one another's burdens.
Roxy

well fasting for me came naturally a lot of the times. All i could do was cry and pray and i couldnt eat for days.
Im still underweight. ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/frown.gif)
However when the Lord wants me to fast and pray and be more focused, my fast usually is from the computer, caffine and nicotine. When i do this i really feel the presence of the Lord so much more and have more peace. I do believe fasting isnt always from food, but things that take our focus off the Lord more than they should. Just my 2 cents worth.
Mark

Well Guys I'm in. I reckon I've been fasting of sorts for these 2 months as I have lost almost 20 lbs. I now weigh less than when I got married. Fat lot of good it does me though!!
Being hungry makes one pray harder in a crisis don't you think??
One day won't kill me and it could certainly help. Please just post the day.
lkd
[This message has been edited by lkd (edited July 30, 2001).]

OK, guys, I guess we're going to fast (abstain from food) on one day....Mark is right, it doesn't have to be about food, BUT we all probably have a different thing we would stay away from, and food would be a universal "same" element. However, if someone wanted to fast from another item they give too much time to, I certainly couldn't object! (Who am I to do that??) After all, the whole object of fasting is to draw closer to God,and be obedient, right?
I've been reading a book lately, called "Releasing God's Power" by Becky Tirabassi. In it, she commited herself to praying one hour a day. So she devised a "plan" in order to be more efficient in her praying. She calls it Her "PART"
P stands for PRAISE
A stands for ADMIT
R stands for REQUESTS
T stands for THANKS
This is a framework for "how" to pray...since we may be praying for a long time (or numerous times during the day), so this gives us an idea of some "categories" to put our prayer requests into.
I don't mean to "preach" how anyone should pray, so, does this sound like it's going to work for you all? Or does anyone have any ideas?
How does Friday sound? Someone mentioned Thursday or Friday, and I think Friday is better for me.
Lupo

Good Morning Guys!
Friday is not a good day for me unless I just fast through breakfast because I have a birthday lunch to attend on Friday. If eveyone else is OK with Friday, then go ahead with the fast on Friday and I will just do as I have stated and fast through breakfast. I will certainly join you in prayer for the prayer requests. Here is my prayer request list:
1. Closer relationship with my Heavenly Father
2. Debt-free
3. Car

Roxy

OK, let's try to simplify this a little bit.....
We will fast and pray SOMETIME Friday OR Saturday (as long as possible for each of you, but preferrably 24 hours). HOW's that? Does that work? The Lord knows each circumstance, and He knows who can or cannot do this for how long, so let's dont' try to put everyone in the same box.

quote:
Originally posted by believe n god:
I would like to add to the list, My church family, My family, and the reconcilation of my husband. Hi -
I am really excited you guys are doing this because I used to fast on bread and water twice a week and then I stopped because of stress, but lately I have had a real desire to fast.
I would like to do it this Friday and every Friday with any or all of you. I think Friday is a good day because it's the day of the Lord's passion.
(Roxy, can you just eat the one meal - lunch - on Friday? That's a fast.)
Just to warn any of you if you are used to having coffee every day, it might give you a headache to go without it, so maybe you could have half a cup in the morning.
I ate crackers which were easier for me than bread.
My prayer requests are:
1. The conversion of my H
2. The conversion of the OW
3. Our reconciliation
4. All of your reconciliations
5. My aunt who has cancer (Maureen)
6. Peace in the world
