How about naming a star for your loved one. The site I used was
http://www.nameastar.net/
but there are others around I think. Costs about $50 and is delivered within 2 days.
Her birthday is tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

This sounds like a wonderful idea and I once considered it however, on a trip to an observatory, I learned that no agency/group/corporation/or entity has ownership of the stars or the right to name them. So, you are basically paying for a bogus document which means nothing other than your loved one is loved and has an expensive piece of paper and you are $50 poorer.
I realize it is possible that I am wrong but you might want to check into the validity of their claims to be able to name the stars.

Cinderella
You're absolutely right. There a few organizations out there that do this sort of thing and it's really just for fun - it just gets your chosen name in abook they publish somewhere, but it's not official, astronimically speaking.
But it's the thought that counts isn't it?

If you're cool, I'm cool. I was really in hopes that I didn't burst your bubble. And you are so right, it is the thought that counts. (At Dyer Observatory, connected with Vanderbilt University, they will, for a fee, send you information about a star selected because its coordinates correspond to some significant date or other selective criteria including its distance from the earth, content, age, etc. with your money going to support the observatory which is a scholarly facility.
