from my understanding an Exit affair is one when a person who is married has an affair with some one and uses that that affair as an "exit" our of their marriage. It can also be use even if you are not married and just haveing a relationship.
But the affair is the exit out.

Hi.
Just my thoughts. I asked Steve Harley if he thought my W's affair was an exit affair. His response was "So What"? Basically that is just a term that gets thrown about. You can still fix your marriage and that is what you should concentrate on. I think my w's affair was somewhat like that, but I took her by suprise and tried to work on me and "us". She thought I would just kick her out. At first she was looking at places to move, but then changed her mind. Of course, she is still in her affair and does think of moving out, but she is Still here after almost a year.
Arrow

I'm not sure it really matters what kind of affair it was. But to answere i think it means exit the marriage. And I would think that would not be known until after the marriage was completely over.
