Just became aware about a month ago that my wife of almost 25 years has been having an affair for the last year with her boss. As soon as I became aware of this I started doing some research and found Dr. Harleys Website, bought one of his books. and the Men are from Mar's book. We have both looked over the information and have been amazed at how clear everything has become as to why things have gone the way they have. We started with a counselor and had two sessions with him and he has told us there is not much reason to come back until my wife makes the decision that she wants to try to make the marriage work. I have made that committment to her, but she still has this other relationship and this other person she loves as well. My question is this the correct approach by the counselor?
I know its a hard decision for her, but I feel we could use some guidance even at this point. Looking forward to your prompt reply
Thanks

Gale,
I'd say that this is a correct approach. Your marriage counselor can't do a whole lot with the two of you, while your wife is having the affair. Now you could be doing marriage counseling separately, working on your behaviors (lovebusters, meeting her needs). This is "Plan A". The counselor might want your wife to give him progress reports on your efforts---and he might also work on having her focus on what she's doing. But joint counseling with the two of you together won't be very productive. And she's unlikely to work on the marriage very much while she's having the affair.

Soon after I found out that my wife had her affairs we attemped to go to counseling.
The counselor that we went to said the same thing, that it was pointless to continue with the counseling until my W stopped seeing the OM and made a commitment to make our marriage work.
So yes I think your counselor has the right approach.
Jason

Hey Gale,
Sorry that you are here and I am glad that you found us.
Counselor is right. No movement ahead until affair (addiction) to OM has stopped.
Sounds like you are heading for the old Plan A and Plan B style (Dr. Harley's that is) of life for a while.
Keep posting. We will be here to help you during all accounts and phases of your so called present life.
Follow the wise advise of Jim. Read all that you can on the MB site. Dr. Harley has saved my marriage. I believe that without him and his proven theories that my H and I would not have stood a chance in the recovery department.
Good luck to you. This is a tough time of the year to be dealing with something like you have to.

Thanks all for your advice and counsel. Plan A is in effect and we'll just have to let this run its course the best we can. Talk to you again soon.
