I have never tried asking anyone for advice, much less the internet, but here it goes. Has anyone known someone or have you personally tried to take your own life? I don’t know what my husband is going through and I feel helpless. I am 24 I have been with my husband since we were 15,(he is the only man I have ever been with) we got married when we were 18 and surprise, surprise we had our first child at 18. We did very well at 1st, we love each other wanted to grow old together and all that jazz. We bought a nice little house, he made enough $$, so I quit my job and stayed home with our daughters. After our 2nd year of living in our house my husband was laid off and couldn't find a job. I got one but couldn't pay all our bills. He became very depressed and just told me 1 day he wasn't in love with me anymore and took his stuff and left to live with 1 of his friends. I did the only thing I thought I could and called up my mom & dad and told them what had happened. They sold my house for me. (All the $ went on paying off the bank note) I put most my stuff in storage & moved in with my parents. Well after 4 months he and I got back together, but we didn't have a place to live and he was still very depressed. After a few months of “being back together" and not having a job yet, he was driving around 1 day, and just decided that we would be better off without him so he drank half a bottle of brake fluid. His car ran into a woman’s mail box when he passed out and she called 911. He was taken to the local hospital and taken care off-- it was crazy. They thought he had done some type of drug. I didn't ever find out what he did until about a month later when he remembered. He even gave everything he owned away! Ok so that 2 years ago. My mom and dad have moved 200 miles away since then. I missed my pill and we had another baby since then. (We have 3 girls) He tried ending his life because of his situation, and while we were separated he slept with some chick and he felt guilty. (After he woke up in the hospital, he came clean on everything he did since birth!) My parents don’t know anything about this, they come very close to hating him, and so I never talk about him to them. They have some type of remark every time he calls. They say I’m stupid and naïve. He’s only allowed to call here once a week, because “if he can’t support his children than he doesn’t deserve to talk to them” my mom says. When my mom & dad said they were moving, I was going to try my hardest to get my own place before they did, but my husband told me to go, because it's a small town where we always wanted to raise our girls. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! I left my husband and my only best friend there. He told me he would find a job, save some $ and move himself and our stuff out here. I thought it sounded doable. But it hasn’t happened yet. I keep telling him that I think he needs counseling, but he says NO all he needs is his family. I’m not sure if he is stable sometimes. It’s hard to tell over the phone. We go see him when my girls have school holidays. I know this is hard on them, but they have adjusted to it. He managed to get 2 jobs a month ago, but he has a really hard time talking to people now, so I’m not sure how it’s going.(he won’t tell me) He lives with his mom now. Since he now has an income, he wants me and our girls to move in with them. But she live in a small 2 bedroom apartment where a guy was almost beat to death with a base ball bat down stairs last year. She smokes(cigs. & pot), drinks, and curses, and has a different man a month. (My husband had a hard life.) I just want to raise our girls here where the crime of the week was someone stole a guy’s tractor trailer. He thinks I don’t love him enough because I won’t move there. Ever since his suicide attempt he has been very "into the bible". Now I believe in God, but I don’t thank him for every breath I take. I don’t consult God on every action I take. What I really want is to live comfortably and sanely as a family in a small town. I love and want my husband, but I want him to be like he was before. He was 1 of those guys who sees someone on the side of the highway and will stop to see if they need help- He’ll give a buck or 2 to a homeless person. He is very emotional, giving and loving, but he doesn’t love himself. I think sitting here and waiting is the best choice for our children. I want to do what’s best for our girls. I just don’t know what to do. Any advice???

{{{Sarah}}} Hold in there girl there is hope!

There are a few posters here who have dealt with suicide/attempted suicide. (ladysheep is one) Try reposting this to the emotional needs board. The conflict resolution board doesn't get much traffic.

It looks like you have alot of issues here:

First, depression is an illness. Your H needs a doctor. Is he taking anti-depressants? You might want to check out this post. Depression can be very destructive as many of us on this site well know.

Second, this rings warning bells big time.
quote:
They have some type of remark every time he calls. They say I’m stupid and naïve. He’s only allowed to call here once a week, because “if he can’t support his children than he doesn’t deserve to talk to them” my mom says.

He is YOUR husband and your children's FATHER. Your parent's attitude towards your husband sounds very destructive to your marriage and your children. It sounds like you will have to set some boundaries with them.

There is hope for your situation. You've come to the right place. Start by reading reading the Basic Concepts on the main page and keep posting!

"Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide" by Kay Redfield Jamison. A good book but hard reading.

Thank you for replying. I will move my post. No he is not taking medication or seeing a Dr., he can’t afford too, and I’m sure if he would go if he could. He says he’s fine, and just wants his family and all his problems will go away.
