Hey RWD,
I'm not ignoring you. I've been trying to spend a little less time here, and just didn't see your post. After last weeks foray, I was pretty worn out.
Yes, this is where I go, but I don't know him. Even in mechanical engineering (my specialty) I don't know a whole lot of people. We have our small group of specialists that we tend to circulate amongst. As an undergraduate, people from lots of different disciplines are forced to mingle. At the PhD level, we are pretty holed up in our little world though. I'm taking some management classes, so I do meet a few of those folks. I've met a few materials people as well. Now if David was a woman, it would be more likely for me to know them. There are just so few women walking around here, that they stand out. Me included, I guess. It is much more likely for him to know me, than for me to know him. It's wierd that way.
