I am the BS and I filed.
According to my lawyer, it doesn't make any difference who files first. However, I disagree. Filing first put her in a reactive mode. She had to justify, rather than me.
I filed because I wanted to protect myself and my children from her irresponsibility. It worked somewhat. Not great, but better than if I hadn't filed first, IMHO.

My x started the papers and they had bounced back and forth a couple times with revisions when we stoped them for another reconciliation attempt.
When she continued to pile on me in counseling and then I found out she was back seeing om, I called my lawyer up and restarted the papers. X went along and we finished it up in 30 mins. The papers were filed/accepted 1 month later and we were divorced 2 months later.
My lawyer said when the WS is a woman, they usually feel guilty and will sign more easily giving more away. I guess that is true as I got the house and the kids. I am not so sure that the lawyer and I looked into the future far enough. In regards to the kids for items liek cars and their education.
My lawyer said that the child support is considered to cover that.
