Hey guys, I discovered something kinda neat. There's this company that offers what I think is "legal insurance" - for 10 bucks a month, you get a legal provider (just like in an HMO) who will examine documents, write letters for you, give you advice, etc.
I thought it was pretty useful - and 10 bucks is nothing! The website is http://www.prepaidlegal.com/
I've already got a lawyer retained for my divorce, but my H can't afford one. Should I bother to pass this tip on to him, so he could at least have a lawyer review the divorce papers, or should let him figure his own problems out??!! ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif)
--BR

You would want to help him by protecting him? ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/confused.gif)
I'm basically a nice person, though x wouldn't agree with that, and I say I wouldn't help mine out on this matter. However, I wouldn't take advantage of him for my sake. Get what I could for the children. I'll survive.
But I'm having a "bad x day". ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/frown.gif)

Here's my vote, I'm not a bitter person, but let the ex figure it for himself. I don't see him offering to pay half of your bill! My ex paid five hundred dollars for our divorce, I paid in the thousands!!
Thanks for the link, I'll check it, I doubt that would work for a divorce, they are pretty pricey!
Dana
Hi BR,
We have legal insurance at work. It is part of our benefit package, it costs the city about $12.00 a month for each member of the department.
Problem is, it is very much like an HMO. They already have their money up front, so getting them to do anything is like pulling teeth. You get the legal help at their convenience, not when you want it.
The only time I needed them, the service was so bad that the legal aid committee paid for me to get an outside lawyer at $65.00 per hour. I was able to get a personal friend to do the work for that, but most lawyers can't work for that kind of money.
I'm for letting your STBX take care of his own legal counsel. Not out of meanness, but he is a grown man, and choices must be made. If he chooses to go through this without a lawyer, so be it.
In our state, divorce isn't all that expensive. A no fault divorce can be done for about a thousand dollars all told. What costs the money is the posturing and negotiating and bringing the STBXs to agreement. It just uses up an awful lot of a lawyer's time while parting couples try to get their last shots in at each other.
A lot of years have passed in our case. I wound up paying ex's legal fees just to get it over with. Ex's lawyer was a real professional, and I met him again a couple of years ago. We now run in the same social circles, civic affairs and that sort of thing. Like most lawyers, he is an honorable man.
Bumper
Thanks guys for the advice.
I won't advise him! ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif)
I have been feeling a tad guilty when I shouldn't because I hired a pretty good lawyer (borrowed the money from a girlfriend), and my H can't afford to do so also. But this really is his fault, and so no its not my problem.
He's going pro-se, I just thought it might be good for him to have a lawyer somewhere at least able to review documents for him. But you are right, WHY would I want to help him in this?!!
