I read this somewhere a couple of years ago...here at MB, if I remember correctly. It is a
great story...if I can remember all the details.
***
Supposedly, when Neil Armstrong entered back into the lunar module after his historic
quote on the moon of “That’s one small step for man...”, he uttered another statement
that did not get the same amount of publicity. Apparently he was heard to say:
“Good luck, Mr. Gorsky”.
The folks at Mission Control really didn’t know what he was talking about, thinking he
might have been wishing one of his Russian counterparts good luck in their own space
exploration pursuits.
Problem is, there was no Russian cosmonaut by the name of Gorsky.
Upon his return to earth, he was asked about his comment wishing “Mr. Gorsky...good
luck!”
Neil just smiled and shook his head and said nothing.
For years after that, every once in awhile, the question would come back up and Neil
would always politely decline to comment about the “Mr. Gorsky” remark.
Years later, at a fundraising event in Florida, a reporter who remembered the statement,
once again, asked Neil what was behind the quote. Smiling, Neil relented and gave an
explanation. He felt free to share the story since this Mr. Gorsky had passed away.
According to Neil, years earlier, when he was just a small boy, he lived next door to the
“Gorsky’s.” One day, while playing ball with some friends, the ball was hit into their
neighbors yard...and right up underneath the bedroom window, that was open. Neil ran
over to retrieve the ball...and as he was fixing to return to his yard, he heard Mrs. Gorsky
hollering at her husband:
“Sex!? You want sex?! I’ll give you sex when that boy next door walks on the moon!”
*********
You gotta admit...true or not...that had to put a smile on your face!
