Is this the curse of IT people? I am a sql programmer. So it looks like us sensitive IT people get burned all the time. Or is it just coincidence? Nowilltocarryon is also in IT!!
I have decided the next relationship I have will be with someone in the IT industry, I just think that there is a certain something about people in IT that makes them nicer!
Pantha | | |

Pantha,
I know this message wasn't for me but I looked anyway. ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/wink.gif)
Anyway, just wanted to tell you. One thing great about the divorce is that it gave me the initiative to learn something new. I am learning SQL. I went on brain bench a couple of weeks ago and scored a perfect score on a sql test. I was very excited!!! I don't feel that I know enough to feel comfortable enough to look for a job in the field yet, but I know some day I will.

ANNA
| | |

I looked too. Sorry to bust your bubble but I think you guys are a bit over optimistic. My wife and the OM are both in IT. Maybe their the Black Sheep of the IT industry?

Pantha, Anna2000 & Purple Tang:
Hey, great to hear from others in the industry!
I think designing good software demands a great deal of introspection. I think that this quality serves us well in the "outside" world.
The hard part comes when we deal with people who live on a more surface level...like my W! I don't mean to imply that she is shallow, but simply that I have never had to think more deeply in my life than when I have had to design software and I think that that deep thinking spills over into the rest of my life.
My company is so small that we need to wear more than one hat. I write vb code and sql queries everyday. I am really getting hooked on SQL.
For those who are interested, The is a great book, titled "The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL", by Ken Henderson.
I thought I knew SQL until I read this book.
vb_guy
[This message has been edited by vb_guy (edited September 23, 2001).]

Anna good for you. Just practice doing some sql and you'll soon feel confident enough to go get that job of your dreams!
Purple I am sorry... definately must be the black sheep...
vb_guy I agree with you. Programming means a lot of introspection. So I guess we are trying to rationalise the situation we find ourselves in. If... then... else.... While... do... else... you know what I mean. I am so wanting to get back into VB I love VB, but just never seem to actually take the time to pick up my skills in that area. I really think that is going to be one of my goals.
Pantha | | |

Well, you may be on to something here. I, too, am IT. This is kind of scary. My wife never quite followed my career. She was a business major and is in accounting now. Imagine my shock when low and behold, "The Clown" is an accountant. Heres to the IT gurus.

VB guy,
I will definitely go buy the book. Also, if you or anyone has other books to recommend, please tell me about them. As I have only been learning SQL for a couple of months and the only book I've read from cover to cover is SQL in 24 hours. Which was a good starter book, but GEEEZ the small mistakes in that book drove me nuts...
I am getting more and more hooked on SQL too. The first time I created a table, I set in awe of the result I got, the first time I did a querie and got results again I set in awe. Everytime I learn something new about SQL I get so excited. I have been practicing by creating a fake database. Trying to come up with potential problems as fix them as I go. When I was creating my tables and inputting fake data, I came to a problem where I needed the database to delete all related information from other tables automatically when deleting a persons id from one table, researched it and applied the on delete cascade, once again the results truely amazed me. I so hope the excitement will always be there. I do feel a little so silly that such little things get me excited. ![[Linked Image from marriagebuilders.com]](http://www.marriagebuilders.com/forum/images/icons/smile.gif)
Another thing that amazes me is, always being an end user before I now look at databases in a whole new light. How very cool!
ANNA
[This message has been edited by Anna2000 (edited September 24, 2001).]

Pantha,
I think the problem with Us IT People is that we seem to analyze our situations or problems logically . We don’t seem to handle emotional problems well as there is no one right answer when it comes to emotions..
Ive also read up on some statistics on professions and IT professionals are one of the highest casualties when it comes to divorce. Their explanation are : Keeping up with Technology . ( Impacts Family quality time ). Attempt to analyze all problems logically. Mission critical applications. ( 24 HRS Call out)
| | |

That is a very interesting statistics. I am a network enigeer for the military. I am on constant call lately. Had to go in several times during my sons football and soccer games. Wife has been helping somewhat, but I can tell she is starting to get ticked about it. Heres to US!
| | |

Anna:
Is your goal to be a programmer? If so then there is one name you need to know: Dan Appleman. His web site is <A HREF="http://www.desaware.com."
