I learned about my husbands alcoholism the same time I learned about his affair.
I have been attending therapy and alanon.
After 4 very brief separations, he wanted to work on our marriage..but the thought never lasted more than a day. He went into a 3 day detox program...and after a week, told me he couldn't live without his girlfriend. He moved, quit his job, filed for divorce, is planning on marrying her next month, and raising her two children (one by each previous husband) My ex never wanted children but claims they are soul mates and marriage and her children are a "package deal" He swears he is sober and married me 6 years ago as rebound. Says he should have always married her...he was in love with her since the day he met her. (8 years ago)
But he didn't ... he married me...
We never fought, shared plenty of laughs together, very active, he appeared to be very much in love with me and I know I still am with him. Friends and family are devasted...he had us all fooled.
Usually, it is the non alcoholic leaving...I want to support my ex's sobriety, I am learning to live single and take care of myself...but I love him and see the path of self destruction...none of it makes sense.
Is it possible with the alcohol and drug use that sobriety...really made him realize he didn't love me? Or is he still drinking and needs to get away...because I won't tolerate an alcoholic drinking?
As I read about the disease I have a lot of compassion for him. It's hard to stand back and watch him...it may be my own denial..but I believe he does love me...he just wants to drink and with her he can. He did tell a friend she is volitale and that I was very easy to live with...what's up with that...children, alcoholic, third marriage, volitale soon to be wife....6 major changes within the first six months of sobriety.
What am I missing...recovering alcoholics...please help me understand.
Your husbands affair may or may not have anything to do with his alcholism. He may just be having an affair. You might want to read Dr. Harley's book "How to Survive an Affair". You can get a copy of it on this site. You also might want to post your post in the Infidility board. Good luck.
