I have been trying to get divorced for nearly a year. I have been in the military for 18 years. I have a two-year-old daughter that I am trying to get custody of. She was 6 weeks old when I went to Korea for a year. We have been married just over two years. We have been to a temporary hearing and have been awarded joint custody with me being the custodial parent. The reason I want sole custody is that when my daughter is with her mother, she goes to bed late and doesn't get enough sleep. Her mother also lives with her mother who has parkinsons. Granda is a mean person and hollars alot. So does my daughters mother. Any single dads out there that went thru a custody battle and got custody that can give me some advice...please!
[ June 04, 2002: Message edited by: 1DJJ1 ]

Am in the process. Trial was 2 weeks ago and am hopefull we have prevailed.
My advice - not knowing your circumstances or other evidence to help your case.
Look in your phone book or on the web for a fathers resource.
Get the best lawyer you can.
I was referred to a group called Fathers for Equal Rights. This place gave me tons of good ideas and actually recommended a couple lawyers that had success helping fathers get custody. I took their recommendations and had very good results. I will let you know what the outcome was.
JC

If I can play devil's advocate here.
She is only 2, is that right? How do you know she is being bothered by the Grandmother?
Also, as far as not enough sleep. My kids do that. Especially my YD-6. I put her to bed, turn off lights, but she loves to play in her room at night. No matter what I do, she will not sleep.
Does this make a mother risk losing custody of her child?
Is there more to this?

I am a 9-5 corporate professional with an excellent track record at work and home. The court awarded me every other weekend and one night a week because the court believes the child should have a primary home. The decision was awarded to mom because she was a stay-at-home mother for 2 years.
Unless there is something seriously wrong with mom, you are going to have to negotiate. I am not sure if being in the military is a hinderance because what happens if you are deployed? Who will take care of the child?
