If they don't have a budget tonight, I'll be laid off and state government in TN shut down.
Seems really ironic for me to ask because I am an interviewer in an unemployment claims office. I am also not monetarily eligible for UI because all my base period wages are with a non-covered employer. I'll probably get paid for the time of the lay off eventually - if it happens.
I've never been laid off before. I've always quit jobs to take other jobs or to stay home with my children.
If we don't end up in with a state income tax, we'll end up with 10.25% sales tax on all taxable items such as food or clothing.
The legislature has been struggling with TN state budget for ages and tonight is end of fiscal year and they still don't know what to do. I think they're pitiful. The choices aren't easy and I wouldn't want their jobs but they've had MONTHS to deal with this.
I wish I knew when to get up in the morning. And how long this will last since our workload will be astronomical whenever we go back.
Who will help the unemployed people all over the nation that we talk to daily? The ramifications aren't just for TN residents.

Cinderella,
Hey, don't worry. Government never really stops. They will figure it out and everybody will be back to work soon.
I didn't know you were an unemployment expert!

Thinking about you this morning, Cinderella.
I'm hoping that no news is good news so far.
Let us know how it's going.

As a former TN state employee I totally understand your situation. I got really tired of not getting cost of living increases because there was no money and the annual will I have a job on July 1. I hope for your sake they figure it out soon.
The problem, in my opinion, is that the politicians in Nashville do not have what it takes to fix the state budget crisis. The sales tax is not going to work. Do they not realize that the state borders 8 other states most of whom have lower sales tax? (Guess where all the tax money goes. Its like a sieve.) I have a friend who lives near the North CArolina border and does all her shopping there because they have no sales tax on food and their regular sales tax is low.
Sorry to rant about it but alot of my good friends are affected too and it makes me soo angry.

They're a bunch of idiots - too worried about getting reelected to figure out how to fix the problem. But we do elect a large number of idiots. I wonder how few will be reelected in the next election.
I am considered essential this week. Who knows about next week. Not all offices in my dept are open today. But we are.
AD- drawing UI has nothing to do with how much money you have in the bank - only with what is in your base period and the reason for your separation. There are other related factors but those, and your availability to work, are the big keys. Contact your local office to have questions answered as laws change from state to state.
Everybody, thanks for thinking of me. So far, so good!!

Because I am considered emergency personnel, I have to work on Independence day. I can not go to my dr. appt Friday unless I take annual leave. No sick leave if you are emergency personnel. Where is the screaming icon? I have a diplomatic mission this weekend. I have to see the diplomat!!!!

I did get to work while over 50% of the state's employees were laid off. But I wanted to work. I did not have to work on the holiday. And I did have to work every work day while the diplomat was here. However.......
I will get three compensatory time days for the days I had to work!!!! Vacation and other stuff is coming. YAHOO!!! Three days!!!! YAHOO!!!!
Can they lay off the rest of the employees again. The ones who were laid off will not get the comp time but they will get paid for the three days they did not work. Yes!! Let's do it again!!

Sing - they gave us another 1 cent sales tax and called that that. Didn't have the guts to do anything like look at how money is spent.
Yeah, I think I'm going to start a new political party the "Throw The Idiots Out" party. I jolly well may vote for whoever is running against any incumbent. After all, how much more incompetent can they be?
Oh, and, by the way, I would have loved to see you when you were in Middle Tennessee - but I bet you were here the last weekend in June which is when I took son to Birmingham and I think it's Wiffle who lives there but grew up near me wasn't in Birmingham. How come people do that? [ July 18, 2002, 10:54 PM: Message edited by: cinderella ]

I have seen my parents but not aunts, so I had no free time at all. Was in Nashville to see one of my aunts in the hosptial (everyone is so old) . With 840 going in I sure don't know my way around any more. I had a hard time after they added 440, as that was after we left.
Went by LU, almost didn't know it either. Bet if I checked with chappel office I still have absence I need to make up, think I stayed on Bible, social or some sort of probation the entire time I was there.
I grew up in Green Hills for a few yrs even before the LU days & I hardly know it. Enjoy Davis Kidd, would have loved to have spent more time there.
I think once you mentioned your mom lived close to campus, right? So do you remember back when we would have been single digits this old hamburger place called Joe's, back before the days of fast food in Green Hills. It was on that road that is not quite in front of what is now Davis Kidd, where the thearte use to be.
I better stop before I get homesick. I really didn't want to come back to TX, if my OS was not a SR, don't think I would have.
