I have large package to ship UPS today. I can drive further and send it at the UPS counter or I can drive not so far - barely. and send it from a third party place. Distance is probably about same. Which will cost less? Will that 3rd party cost me more?
I figure someone here knows more than me about shipping.
Thanks for your help. [ July 23, 2002, 10:40 AM: Message edited by: cinderella ]

Third party is definitely more. Unless you save some time and trouble, it's not worth using the third party shipping. UPS ground is 5 business days, Saturdays don't count. Sometimes I wonder if they drive by an address the 2nd, 3rd or 4th day with your package but wait until the 5th day to deliver. The post office offers tracking info now too, but it doesn't show any intermediate information. UPS tracking shows all steps along the way. They'll sock you with dimensional weight charges if it's a big package that doesn't weigh very much. IOW, if your big package weighs 10 pounds, they might charge as if it was 19 pounds just because of the box size. You might need a sticker shock apron when they tell you the price.

Cinderella,
The best thing, if you can do it, is to ship it from work. That's what we do here and we get to take advantage of work's discounted rates. Plus, the shipping person does all the paperwork, nothing to sign. We just reimburse the company afterwards.

I schlepped it all the way to UPS. There is no routine pick up or delivery to my office. So, I dragged my 40# box all the way to the UPS customer center and spent $21 to send my big box away. I am looking forward to vacation!

lacrosse stick, baseball glove, running shoes.. . .

Sleeping bags and folding chairs.
Sharing a vacation with another family. I've never done this. Somehow, I'm not sure it counts as a vacation if you have to take your own silverware.
