OK so I was divorced last Wednesday and everything is going great and then today - bam - I finally cried - I think it was something my brother in law said like what do you care what he does?? What does it matter??? You are divorced and you know he is right !!! I still have not hit the anger point but you know what I have every right to be angry - he wanted to get divorced so I have been nice as pie (maybe a little sarcastic and very hurt) and gave it to him on a silver platter... He is still coming over not so much hanging around because I told him he couldn't do that - so now he walks in and says I know I cannot hang around I will just be here for five minutes.... You know comes in goes in the refrigerator gets something to drink, uses the bathroom... so as I lay awake unable to sleep - because I cannot believe that someone that I was married to for 15 years and together for 19 years - can act like we never had a relationship- I am thinking that the only way to get over him - is to basically get rid of him... I need to have him out of my life - I need to come to the realization that it is over and we are divorced... And actually I need him to come to the realization of how things should be.. I don't know I think I am still afraid that he is gonna be mad at me or something... I mean why should I care.. My sister says that my name is in the dictionary under sucker !!! I just want to wake up tomorrow and be over him - so I can go on with my life.... I am trying to make positive changes - but I still keep including him in our life and he doesn't deserve to be there - he lost that right... So is he just a bad habit that I need to break ?? Has anyone been stuck with the problem of really never getting angry - Still loving the person that did this to - basically letting him have his cake and eat it to....??? What the heck is my problem?? I just want to be normal again someday soon??? Any good advice???

Well, I don't know whether it is good advice, because even though I have only recently been separated, less than two months moved out, I have been dealing with her infidelity and my feelings about it for over 9 months, so I feel like I am much further than my present situation would suggest. I think that what put me into the angry stage was when she began using my children against me. That went far beyond anything that could have been even minutely acceptable, and at that time I realized that even if everything else was forgiven, I could never trust a person who would use her children like that to get something that I was freely giving.

You are absolutely right, you need to divorce him from your life, not just from a piece of paper. DO NOT LET HIM COME OVER AT ALL !!!! There is no reason for him to be in your house, If you have children to exchange, do it at the front door. Let him in the front door and stand between him and the rest of the house, effectively creating a baracade. Don't allow yourself to be used like this. He is lost, and the simple fact that he has no more respect for you and your life than to continue to use you in this way is NOT his way of staying close to you. It is his way of quelling his fears of being alone. He still feels that he "has you" in a fashion because you allow him to have you. Tell him quietly and calmly that you no longer want him to come over. Don't say it in a fit of anger or during and arguement, then it will look like a reaction to the situation, not a well thought out plan. Tell him that you can exchange children at the front door, or you can meet at a jointly agreed upon place, i.e. McDonalds, but don't let him use you.

My wife still tries to use me. She wants more money, but I think I have fulfilled my obligations now. I paid any bills that I remotely was involved in and more. She wanted me to fix her garage door that she broke with my son's bike, still not sure how that all happened. I looked at it, but realized that although I probably could figure it out if I took a while, it was no longer my responsiblity. She wants my ability to do things for her without her responsibility to me. I refuse that sort of arrangement. If she had been honest with me and not left for another once again, I would have been a GREAT ex-husband. But the fact that she treated me so poorly by lying and then hurting me with my children, pushed me into and right on through The ANGER stage at record speed.

Another thing that I think has helped me to progress through this whole thing is probably opposite of what most EVERYONE else will tell you to do. But I believe that by being totally alone and therefore thinking about all the things a TON, I have found my own reasons and thoughts about my marriage and our lives together. I think that by spending TOO much time with others, you kind of dilute your recovery in a way. I am not sure, but my theory is that we will all have to progress through essentially the same amount and sort of stuff in generally the same manner. If we put it under parties and too many nights out, we may be in essence prolonging our recovery because instead of dealing with the crap, we are covering it with a fascade. I understand that sometimes, we need a break, Lord knows that I do. I almost got dressed up and went out late last night just because. But I also believe that depending upon your "toughness" so to speak, you may just need to make him 'mad at you' so that you can get him out of your life.

At this point there is nothing else for you except pain. I try to limit seeing my wife as much as possible, not because I am trying to be mean or not talk, but because I have little that I desire to say, and so often, all I get in any interaction with her is attacks. She acts as though I AM THE ONE THAT RAN OFF AND REPEATEDLY CHEATED.

So my possibly good advice is to tell him NO MORE!!! Limit your interactions with him, a kind of Plan B but for yourself, not to "show him". That has helped me tremendously, and I am not continually bombarded with the crap. I don't know what she thinks I am up to, and realistically I don't care. I have said that twice to her face since we separated. And even though I thought it many times during our marriage, I always took her into account and made things right. No longer. She accused me of "buying" my children's affection because I relaxed a rule about laying down in the car. Yes, it was the worst thing that she could have taken from the situation, which is her trademark reaction to anything I do. Well, in reality, I have been changing incredibly over the last 9 months, and I realized that maybe laying down in the backseat without the seatbelt in optimal position was OK every once in a while, and I relaxed my rule, trying to be a better and more malleable daddy. Well, she felt as though I was buying my boys off. Haha, I just looked at her with awe. Even this sort of thing she can turn into a bad thing that I am doing. I looked at her and for the first time said, "You, know what you are wrong." I quickly explained and instead of argueing with her I said "I don't care what you think, I know the truth and what I was trying to do and that is all that matters to me." I would normally have tried to convince her of my innocence, and she would have sat there with a smirk of disbelief on her face nodding her head, all the while obviously showing me she didn't believe anything I was saying. No longer, she is not worth the effort any longer. If she wants to continue to think the worst of me then she is free to do so, she is no longer of consequence to my life outside of my children. and if she tries to make me look bad by my children, they will eventually see just what kind of consistently even and good daddy they have and what sort of exaggeratedly unreliable mother they have. They will ask the question one day, and if I think they are old enough, I may just tell them, but until then, I will just be a great dad both for them, and for me.

You do the same for you. Take care of you, NOT HIM!!!

PS... The reason why I didn't allow my boys to lay in the car was because I am a doctor and have seen so many car accident victims with seatbelts out of position that I am just afraid of these sorts of things. Being and ER doc for a while really opens your eyes to just how scary life really is. It is a wonder that I don't make my boys wear a suit of armor to check the mail... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

Formely Confused - You are so - RIGHT - I woke up today - well I actually didn't sleep thinking ok enough I am done trying to be nice to him, I am done being his friend - I guess finally I am done... He is so totally taking advantage of me... He has all of his tools, and stuff - still in the cellar and the shed - I need to tell him to get rid of everything - I am never going to be a normal person again - until he is completely out of my life and like you said I stop taking care of him...I do take care of him - He calls me anytime he wants to do something to ask my opinion - I will tell you he literally still comes into the house like he lives there - It is driving me crazy but part of me wants him to realize what he has lost - but in all actuallity he is never going to realize what he has lost until I let him go.. I have to stop being afraid of not having him in my life because he isn't in my life now... he is doing what he wants when he wants - I have to stand tough.... And face that it is over - My kids know that there Dad doesn't want to be there - they are 9 and 12 and they know alot - they are girls so they tend to listen quite alot... I am going to take my youngest to my therapist to give her someone to talk to ... You are right your boys will know that you are the dependent one and that their Mom screwed up - they will always love her but they will realize someday - You sound like you are doing a great job distancing yourself from her..I try but I sometimes find myself asking him for stuff - but you know what no more - I just cannot do it anymore.. It is tearing me apart - I am so sick of woe is me.. I need the he cheated on me - he left me - its his loss attitude... I am not afraid to be by myself - I think that part of me is afraid to just be without him... But right now really I don't even know who he is??? I guess maybe I am finally done... I am sick of this heartache it is causing me....Thanks for your advice - and good luck to you also...

Maw-

I just wanted to also lend you some support.

You have got to set your boundaries with this man!

Especially now that you are divorced.

If you want the tools out of your house - don't have him come and get them - you box them up and deliver them to where he lives now.

Change the locks if you are not strong enough to get the key back from him.

This will be soooooo hard for you, but you have to start getting some support and make these changes.

At the very least, your therapist should be telling you these things and be giving you some support to be strong and learn to be your own person - if not - get another therapist!

There can be no reconciliation without your ExH learning to respect you and from his actions he does not respect you. He may not even respect himself, but he is on his own journey now nad you need to take care of yourself.

As I say these things to you, I am also saying them to myself because I've been divorced since May and I'm still trying to break free from the spell of ExH - actually it's more just fear of change. My ExH is no one who I would want to be with and I'm actually must happier emotionally now than I ever was, but it's still sad that the family is broken up and that ExH wasn't the person who I thought he was.

However we need to see reality and not the picture that we want to hold onto in our minds.

Set your boundaries! Gather strength. It will take a long time to get over the end of the marriage, but you have to start the healing process sometime. It's for your own good, and the good of your kids.

Hang in there. K

K- Thank you and one valid point you make is when you give someone else advice you tend to listen to yourself and say my god I am right I should be doing this... I really need to set those boundaries - I actually do not know where he lives - I didn't want that visual of his apartment in my mind... The part that ticks me off - is that he acts like we should be best friends - he says I don't hate you - I just don't love you like that anymore - well duh - I should hate you - but for me hate is such a strong emotion that I cannot even deal with it now... I always guess I feel like he is gonna get mad at me and not want to be in my life forever - but you know what I must face that he isn't in my life and rock on - so to speak.. I have been excercising and doing alot of things that I would have never done before when I was with him... I am also not sure that I want to be with him either - it is just that I am not sure I can handle him with someone else... I still in my mind am in some sort of limbo - I guess - I really need to set those boundaries like you said and go on my way with my kids without him.... I need to stop being nice.... Thank you for your support.... Mimi
