As I am separated and my Birthday is coming up Nov 8th I was wondering how you guys have handled the emotions of it with no partner there? This is my first B'day without my Wife for 15 years or so.

Its a work day so that takes care of the day time and I have booked tickets for the UK Opening of "Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets" for myself and the children anyone have any advice?

Neil.

Neil,
You have the right idea...stay busy, busy, busy! Get with friends and family, especially if they know the details of what you're going through.

Another option is to do something just for you - maybe something you haven't done before, maybe not...try a new restaurant, a sport or activity you haven't participated in before, some "treat" just for you. (women go to spas, but not sure if that's your cup of tea!)

The idea is to make GOOD memories of this day, so you won't look back at it and feel depressed or have regrets.

Mine occurred about 2 months after separation. She didn't even acknowledge it herself. But was angry because I didn't thank her for taking our children out and getting me a present.

Don't expect much. Not that I did, but I did expect a "Happy Birthday" at least on the phone. Heard nothing except anger a few days later at just how "uncaring" I was for not telling her how much I appreciated her "dragging" our kids out at 7:30 the night before so they could get me something.

Make time with your children memorable. I think the Harry Potter opening is a great idea. Try not to lament the fact that you are without your wife. I too was without her for the first time in about 15 years. It is hard, but it is harder if you allow it to be.

Keep your head up and love those children. They will give you direction for the day.

Thanks Guys, its a bit of a bummer because its on a Friday where my wife has the kids so potentially I shall be on my own that weekend. First time I've done that.

Will have to keep myself very busy. Neil.

Porsche - handling your birthday by yourself is no fun. Do something different, just a suggestion, go to a massage therapist. A friend of mine went for the first time, and he didn't feel comfortable, but when I talked to him later, he said it was awesome, enjoyed everyminute, and could hardly drive home. He was so relaxed and felt wonderful. Plan this for Saturday, be with friends later, or get a movie to watch at home and bring home a takeout.

Remember God created you, God does not create junk! You deserve to do something totally different than you normally would. This is where inventive ideas are needed, and go forth and find something awesome!
