I need to know about any and all financial help sources for a wife in an emotionally abusive marriage who is looking to get out. PLEASE, don't recommend shelters, I have three kids and am trying to keep things as normal as possible. The situation I am in is this, my family is in TExas and i am in SC. If I leave state with the kids, he can take me to court for temp custody. If I stay here, I have to wait until we are separated 1 full year before I can file for divorce since he has not "physically" abused me. I make nominal wages in my job and am just trying to find a way out. Any suggestions??? I have even considered doing a website ala "savekaryn"!! I am desperate at this point.

Hi Karyn,
You said your wage is nominal and wouldn't be enough to carry you and your 3 children if you left your H. Have you explored the idea of a room mate? Perhaps someone else that is a single mom, someone you can time-share child care and expenses with.
Just a thought.
Jo

I have considered that as an option, but with 3 kids, no matter what it is going to be very cramped quarters. My best friend has offered that sort of arrangement once she gets back stateside (she is in Germany right now), but she wont be back until April 2004. Just so confuzzled and scared and I just don't know what to do.

SG-
I'm sorry to hear of your situation with the kids and all. I'm in SC as well and if you haven't already contacted them, I'd advise calling Palmetto Legal Services at (803) 799-9668. This is a free service for SC residents and I bet they might have some useful advice. Good luck with everything!

In our area, the Women's Crisis Center offers free counseling, and specifically deals with issues of abuse, including emotional abuse. Try yours.
