I have a question about people who have joint physical custody.
My H said he wants a divorce. He wants us to sell our house in the spring and separate. Of course we have to be separated for a year. But my question is this--
When two people share joint physical custody of the kids and split all their monetary needs--who claims the kids on their tax return??
I think in joint physical custody there is no real primary residence. Both houses would be primary residences.
Thanks to those who respond. I'm just getting all my ducks in a row. OH, I live in Virginia if that makes any difference.

In our case we have 3 children.
On even years I claim the oldest and youngest while she claims the middle child - vice versa on odd years.
I would recommend putting in your decree to alternate years claiming children, on Odd years you claim oldest and he claims youngest - vice versa on even years.
You also need to look into the qualifications for "Head of Household" status, that will give you better rates than single.

If it's joint custody, usually you get it spelled out in the divorce decree. Even if it's NOT joint 50/50, I would have it spelled out anyway.
