Ashley is 17. Following surgery, she had a coronary and is in a coma. They have removed the respirator and feeding tube. She is presently breathing on her own. But the future is so uncertain.
Please keep Ashley and her family and friends and the medical workers in your prayers. [ September 20, 2003, 01:30 AM: Message edited by: cinderella ]

Update: Ashley Clark, 17 year old friend of the Kinzer’s - She had the feeding tube replaced yesterday. Tuesday afternoon one of the nurses and Debby thought that Ashley squeezed their hands on command. When the neurology team came in they didn't see it, nor did they check her eyes for any pupil dilation. After they left, Debby & Kent thought they saw movement in her eyes. The nurses were coming in every 15 minutes to work to get Ashley to squeeze their hand on command. The jaw surgeon had been out of town for 2 days. He checked her pupils with the light and said they definitely dilated! He also said she looked like a different patient from 2 days ago...so... The doctors will check more after the feeding tube is in place and she has received some nourishment. They feel like she is so weak she may respond better once she is a little stronger. The Mayfair church’s website is continually updated with her status. The address is http://mym.mayfair.org/wwwboard/index.htmlKeep praying, please. I just can't imagine what her family is going through.

Hopsice nurses only come in, in most cases, if death is days or months away. There is no recovery anticipated - only death. Which could be the ultimate recovery depending on your spiritual beliefs.

There is little change. You can click this link to read the latest. Hospice nurses are coming in. Some friends came to sing for her and she opened her eyes but didn't look at anything in particular. http://mym.mayfair.org/wwwboard/index.html

Here's the latest update, copied off the website where there are updates:
"We just got home from a good visit with Kent, Debby and Ashley! Mitch worked with Ashley doing 'range of motion' physical therapy and Holly & I had a real good visit with Debby too. I have 2 things to share with you... First of all, there is a hospital in Atlanta, the Scottish Rite something, that is one of a few in the country that specializes in severe brain trauma/head injury coma patients. They are coming to evaluate Ashley this coming Tuesday, Sept 2. So our fervent prayer can be that they will see the appropriate signs that will make them able to admit Ashley to their hospital! IF they will take her, it will involve Debby living there in Atlanta and Kent visiting on the weekends, while Ashley undergoes very intensive therapy. This could be a really encouraging thing."

September 18 This week in Atlanta has been a good week for Ashley. The staff there are working with Ashley in intense therapy everyday to train her to hold her head up, turn her eyes side to side as well as other small things. Things are slow, but this is expected. Today (Thursday) they will put a cast on Ashley's feet to keep her feet from pointing down. Medically, there is not much to report on. Ashley's condition is much more serious than most patients there and it will be much more difficult to recover. However, we do have hope and we do trust in a mighty God. Debbie expressed that it has only been through the prayers and the support of friends and family that they have made it this far. The family is so appreciative. Things are day to day. The doctors met with the Clarks on Tuesday and said that they will recommend to the insurance that Ashley stay for therapy for 3 to 5 weeks. Debbie says this is the usual recommendation as they try to set small goals. Again, the family wants to say thank you for the prayers and continued support.
---------------
I do not know this child but this has caused me so much sadness. Please keep praying for her.
