Do you know which study book is the best? There are so many I am overwhelmed with the choices....GMAT for dummies looked pretty good, but so did 30 days to prepare for the GMAT and so on. Any tips on taking it? Studying or preparing for it?

I used the Princeton Review book, however, that was 10 years ago.
Unless you want to go to a top flight school, a 600 should get your in anywhere. Many of my grad school friends scored over 700 and were still waitlisted at Wharton.
Good Luck whichever you choose, and enjoy your education.

So the lucky red underwear won't really work?

Adgirl,

I took the test about a year and a half ago and I did very well with only taking the practice test that came with the signup.

I had my undergrad degree in business, and I thought that most of the questions were related to concepts from that degree...it's not so much a test of formulas, but that you understand how to think critically and can communicate your ideas. So, in my opinion, I don't really think it is a test you can "study for" and score a lot higher than if you hadn't studied.

Good luck.

Thanks hoping4best. Are you getting your MBA now? My undergrad is in business also with an emphasis in marketing. I am wondering about the essay questions too- did you prepare for them?

Yup, I've taken quite a few courses and I should be done by Dec '04. I'll be very relieved when it finally happens! Got a very crucial and difficult test on Monday...

All I can really say is that I looked at the practice tests and took them...for the essays, the questions they asked were about general business concepts. It seemed more like a critical thinking type of test at that point. You need to be able to evaluate statements, then find the assumptions that are made by the author...stuff like that. There won't be a business case to study since it is fictional material on those. If you have good business sense and can communicate well, you'll do fine on the essays.

I will offer this caveat...I have always done well on these standardized tests. ACT was in top 1%, GMAT top 12% without studying more than an hour or two. If you feel like you need to study, go ahead and do it...

What is your emphasis on your MBA? Finance, marketing, management..?? Are you working full time right now and school part time? Are you going to class or doing an online program?
I am most interested in marketing research...
What do you want to do when you finish?
I got a 25 on my ACT - I think that is a little bit above average, but I still probably need to study more than you did. My scores were highest in English, then Math, then Science on it.

The program I'm in is 4 MBA courses and then a choice of electives to total 30 hours, so I really don't need to specialize in anything. Most of the courses I've had are finance and economics. I really enjoy finance and would like to teach it someday. I work fulltime, so I only take 1 class a semester at the university I received my undergrad from.

Marketing research is a lot of stats. Hope you have a spare calculator!

I think the worst part of my ACT was English...I'm a math and science wiz...I am very proud that I aced the science portion (36).

My professor stated some interesting things about online degrees...that a lot of people were not hiring people who obtained these degrees. I don't know how true it is, but if you look into these programs, get some numbers on job placements, etc. It's anecdotal advice, but worth heeding...although the professor does have an obvious bias in bashing the competition...

I like stats and calculators!
I had some concerns about the online programs. Sounds like your professor is confirming those concerns.
I think we were opposite on the ACT. I had like a 30 or 31 in English, a 26 in Math I think, and I remember, an 18 in Science

On another note, hoping4best- we had similar crappy times- my d-day was 8/20/02 and my divorce was 3/11/03....weird. I hope you are doing better like I am.

adgirl,

i have my MBA but i went back to grad school at 28-30 years old. The GMATs are really to provide a tie breaker. The last 20% of each entering class are all about equal in one way or another, and so they can fall back upon an objective answer. . .

Alot of MBA programs want some sort of business experience, or good work experience to get a real life picture of you. . . as long as you have that, and aren't applying to the top 11, you should be fine. . . .

any review will work, just study the concepts that you are weakest on, and take a practice exam. . .

i am in finance. . . but if you are wanting to go into marketing and stats, also look into getting a masters in a quant subject also or in place of. . . that will get you farther than an MBA, as an MBA is more oriented towards running and managing a business, and if you really want to go into marketing and stats, then MS in Math would be better. . .

another point of view to think about.. .

Wiffty,
Thanks for the advice. I need to do reasonably well on the GMAT due to my GPA in college. I was a good high school student, but then in college I worked full time and partied too hard and got lazy. So I need to do reasonably well on the GMAT (560 or above). I know I am a smart girl and can do it if I just apply myself. I was in retail management when I was in college, and I have been in advertising for 5 years. I like the research part-I had a summer job once doing research surveys and I really enjoyed it, but I never pursued it.
I had planned to find a school where you can get your MBA emphasis in marketing or finance or stats- I hadn't thought about going the math route. You may be on to something there.
Thanks!

adgirl,

I agree on the timelines...I was married in 7/00, and I think that I ignored a lot of warning signals before the wedding.

I am doing much better now. It seems like there is not nearly as much drama in my life anymore, which is a very good thing.

Good luck on whatever you choose to do!

Yep I can agree with that. Something silly, My 14 year old stepniece missed my birthday because she was with her dad, so she wanted to take me to the movies Fri. night. So we go to one theater, and the movie is sold out - And it was Secondhand Lions which has been out awhile and everything.
I say, come on, let's hurry, and drive clear across town to get to the next theater, and she says ok, and we hop in the car and go. We get to the theater just in time, and there are plenty of seats, and we sit down right when the movie starts.
So I am happy...then I think, wow, if ex had been with us, he would have grumbled about going across town, and said oh come on, let's just watch something here (there was nothing else either good or appropriate for a 14 year old) or he would have tried to get us to just go home. Or he would have talked of how much trouble it was. It would have been an ordeal. Instead, it was reasonably smooth- it all worked out. WHat is funny, is the old cycle would be that later ex would come up with something that I was impatient with, and act like he was just trying to help me.
It was actually a relief to be able to make a quick decision about something as simple as a movie without it turning into something.

I can relate completely to less drama. On Friday, a coworker had a little get-together at his house for brats, etc. It was a great time, as it is always fun to meet outside of work and talk about different things.

One thing that xW always did to annoy me was wanting to leave because she was bored and constantly doing things to tell me she wanted to leave rather than try to join in the conversations, etc. It's not like there would be anywhere important to go...she just didn't want to associate with certain people.

Now, I stay most of the evening and have a great time...actually, I was ready to leave before the people I rode with!

LOL, I got the nudge too!! I finally asked him why he would nudge me if we were actually doing stuff with people, yet we could go to his parents for hours and stare at the TV or his dad and him would be off in another room playing golf in the house, and I was left to sit there staring at the TV with ex-mother in law and sister in law. He didn't really have an answer.

The truth is while I did wear this certain pair of underwear for all the tests over the course of the 'tumultuous two years' of decision. I will claim my scores as coming from my hard work and vigor rather than relegate them to a bit of dyed cotton... heh heh heh

Formerly Confused,
Crap. So what you are telling me is I actually have to work at something? hahahahahahha.
Just kidding. How about I buy GMAT for dummies, study, take the practice tests, pray, and then wear the brightest red underwear I can find..just for a little extra boost? hahaha.
