Braved 2 hours in snow and slush today going to my work which was actually closed but nobody remembered to call me or the exercise physiologist...
I swear GA drivers are worse than TN drivers when it comes to snow and slushy crud.
Is it me or are southern drivers not very good at handling snow?
Then I get home and see the neighborhood kids (I live at bottom of hill in culdesac). The cul de sac ends right beside my house..So the kids are on sleds and sliding down the hill ..it was a matter of time.
Doorbell rings. It's a neighbor that I've never met asking me for help. "Hey..I saw you in the labcoat and scrubs and are wanting to see if you CAN SEE IF MY SON HAS BROKEN HIS ARM." Formerly Confused?? Where are you in sitch's like this one? But enough clinical training under my belt for this one thank God..
I walk out and a seven year old is crying holding his arm. I gently feel it after telling his parent that NO I am not a doctor but have certain clinical training and while I am good, that I would advise taking him to ER for xrays and confirmation...I said it was most likely severely bruised but could be small crack and he needs to be seen.
I tell the parent that maybe it's not the best idea to encourage kids to fly down an icy hill on a sled towards the end of a culdesac with the only thing allowing them to stop being a concerete curb...
The kids are still sliding down the darn hill as I type this and look out the window.
Now I have said that I think quite possibly , myself included, that southern drivers aren't the best in winter weather..but it doesn't take PHD in astrophysics to discover it's not smart to let your kid accelerate rapidly down an icy hill knowing that there's about a ninety percent chance they'll slam into the curb and wreck.
Even my dog didn't want to walk down the hill when I let him out to go to the bathroom...

LoL JP!
I awoke to quite a surprise with the snow. I've been in GA for 1 1/2yrs so far after livign in CA all my life and have lived anywhere that the snow actually stuck to the ground! It's pretty cool. The closest I've come to it actually snowing was snow flurries a few weeks ago in Marrieta.
I'm not experienced in driving in snow/slush, but it's not that hard. I can see where the normal bad GA drivers would be X amount of times worse!

I have to laugh Peachy because I live in Minnesota. I have visited my ex-inlaws in Tn in the middle of winter when there has been a inch of snow. The whole area shuts down and is in a panic. We were like this is nothing. One thing I noticed is that southerners in the snow fail to relize that when it's snowing the roads are icey and they need to slow down. We were on the freeway in Memphis one year and I never saw so many cars sliding around it was like a demo derby. I do realize of course that you don't have the snowplows and sanding trucks we do have here.
Just to let you know it was a beautiful day here. It was about 45 and sunny. Our 25 inches of snow is melting fast.
I bet it was kind of nice having a snow day though!

Your post made me laugh so I thought I'd reply. I can relate, only I'm in CA and get California Snow, which is really rain. But it has the same effect here that snow seems to have on your drivers!! No one can drive! It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to get to work today. . .usually it's only an hour. . . .

Hi JP! Nope, not you. It's all over the South - peeps can't drive in snow! Now I used to live in Virginia - up there, they pretty much? know how to drive in the snow/slush... BUTT, let me tell you, the second the weatherman says it MIGHT snow... Every fricking body in town gets into their car, races down to every single grocery store and convenience store and they WIPE THE SHELVES CLEAN of -eggs -milk -beer Don't know why. Hell, I saw one lady buy 7 gallons of milk. I asked her how many kids she had and she said it was only her and her husband... *let me clarify this: she was so worried that she couldn't even put one back so I could have a gallon for my then-wife & 2 kids* Doesn't add up. Whatever. I hope she liked her 'cottage cheese in a jug' the following week... Harold About the kids sliding down the road with a curb to stop them - a lot of parents probably aren't home to watch their kids. That, or they don't care. Sad but true. [ February 26, 2004, 09:34 PM: Message edited by: Sauron Lord Of The Rings ]

JP I was laughing as I read your post. I think (for me, at least) I sometimes am not as cautious because I have 4wd and it gives me an extra sense of security. That being said, however, I agree with everyone. Here in NC we shut down EVERYTHING, panic at the grocery store (I've had similar experiences as Harold) and then let the kids out to enjoy the stuff. After a few days out of school for 3 inches of snow, they get cabin fever, ya know? One time my kids got a foam cushion from the attic (kept for camping purposes) and used it at the end of their hill. Come on, you have to admit you would enjoy sledding down a good hill too!

Now cut that out y'all! You Yankees are so proud of your beloved snow maybe a wee bit too much! Just cause y'all get tons of it and get the experience you need to be able to drive in it like Mario Andretti..don't blame us Southerners for not handling it too well on the RARE occasion we EVER get the white stuff!! How in the blazes are we supposed to handle something well when we rarely get the stuff... Like my piano teacher once told me..practice makes perfect...Come on now y'all..how often do us proud Southerners get to practice driving in snow!! Be fair now! I'm married to a Yankee and God bless y'all Yankees but you do tend to be a bit on the arrogant side and think your way is best a bit too much
I'm from the South and I like it that -a-way (spin off of "I'm from the country and I like it that-a-way for non Southerner non country listening people)
Oh and at least us Southerners get to bask in the wonderful sun and enjoy outdoor sports tons longer than you do since we get beautiful weather tons more than you ROFL! Can we say fishing, barbecues, swimming pools, etc...
And for the record..as much as you Yankees love to make fun of us Southerners for our ways you should here the boatloads of laughter after we get finished with making fun of you Yankees. I mean come on..whoever heard of saying "you guys" or "you uns" Puh-leaassssssssse that sounds so ignorant..
Ok..I fought fire with fire...now I'm going to get my son up and ready for the day.
PROUD SOUTHERNER FOREVER!!
