Last night my 12 yr old son announced "I don't have to listen to "george" (my fiance'), my dad said so! He continued that since "george" isn't related to him, he's not an authority and he can ignore them.

Right now, my fiance' doesn't live with us, but we are getting married in October. He doesn't make up the rules, but he DOES back me up and he has reprimended my son for talking back to me or picking on his brother. I think we are on the same wavelength as far as parenting goes.

How should I handle this? There's no point in talking to my ex, he doesn't listen and I think he wants to cause conflict between myself and my fiance'.

Does he listen to his teachers??

They are not related to him but they are adults who deserve his respect.

I'm sure George doesn't boss him around so maybe you can just calmly explain the importance of respecting adults who are looking out for his best interest. Wether it's George or not.

Be the better parrent at showing the difference between right and wrong!

I hear you.

I'd tell your son, well, that's Dad's opinion. He makes the rules at his house, and I make the rules here. "George" will be your step-dad, and you need to respect him just like you need to respect me, your dad, your teachers, etc.

Been there ... my kids have pulled the "we don't need to listen to you" stunt on Westley. It is usually right after a prolonged stay at Dad's. More often than not, they are fine with him.

George also takes my son hunting and fishing and plays endless games of monopoly and risk with him.....something his dad never did and still doesn't do. His dad shows love by being Playstation games for him every week and sending him off to play.
