Just realized that yesterday made one year of me being a single girl again.
What has that year done for me? Alot. I learned to not get upset when things dont go my way. Have learned how to manage life rather than react to it. In fact, my favorite thing to say when something happens that's not the greatest thing is "how can I manage this?"...By saying that when an issue rises, you work through the problem without letting it get the best of you.
Ah. Dating... I did begin to date this year and actually had a boyfriend for the first time in 10 years. He's a great guy, but needs to find himself. We still are good friends and who knows. He phoned on christmas eve and we had a good talk for about 30 minutes. In some ways we do miss one another. I am going out on wednesday evening with somebody else...a guy who lives five minutes away. Really cute and a super nice guy. We've had 2 cups of coffee together (met at Starbucks) and he's so far pretty darn a good candidate for dating and more! I found that the myth regarding the "10 women for every guy" over 30 isn't that true. I have not had any problems getting a date at all. I think it's how you perceive yourself. If you believe odds are against you in meeting others, then they are. Went out with a few duds (the turbo dater radiologist and my former neighbor who made moves on me when his little boy was in his house)but have learned the value of not stretching anything out that doesn't need one more second of my time.
More so that dating was growing with my son. We are closer than ever. He is maturing into such a wonderful little boy. Got best offensive player on his soccer team this year. He is an excellent reader and I have read to him nightly since he was a newborn. We travel together and do so many things. He is the brightest spot in my life and I could never ask for more than that. My son is by far my greatest blessing. We have gotten closer now that his dad remarried. It's so evident now that I am his rock. He knows I am always here and that his mommy puts him first.
Endured during this year the immediate remarriage of my xh three days after the divorce was finalized. He eloped with her on new years' eve when she was seven mos. pregnant. I will never forget the way I found out he had become a father again...rather bittersweet but true to his character...he was doing the exchange of our son for custody and he was standing outside his vehicle with both hands in his pockets...which he never did. He did not move at all and just stood there strangely and kept both hands in his pockets and my son even had to open the car door by himself. It was when I finally asked him "why are your hands in your pockets? What is in your pocket?" That he removed them. I then saw the hospital bracelet and then he announced how she had had the baby the day before and surprise! How he had named the baby the very name my son was to be named had he been a girl...a name I picked out. It was a low day for me. Have had many run ins with his new wife this year and she's now finally backed off. After a six month struggle to make herself known as not any more the live in mistress, she got it that I was not going to deal with her. I deal with my xh when it comes to parenting and my boundaries are firm. From what I read here, it seems a few of you may experience this next year and I can tell you...you will survive this too.
It's been a whirlwind year. Like the beginning of "A Tale of Two Cities" it was the "best of times and it was the worst of times". But growing pains are just like that.
Financially it's been harder than heck. But I am making it and am good at my work. It's hard and difficult being a single parent. You don't have enough hours in the day. And there isn't enough time to do the things you wish you could do each day with your child.
On a light note, am planning a special trip this year with my son. Not sure where, but it will be before June.
So. As of today, December 27th, 2004, I am the head of a little family. Just my son and myself. We have a new puppy (4 mos old) and our older dog and two birds. Have the greatest child in the world and I have a good job. I don't know where 2005 will take us. But I have faith and I trust it will take us wonderous places

I'm also right up on my 1 yr since the big D. My xwife left on my youngest son's B-day if you can imagine.
Peachy, I can almost echo your ups & downs. Me too, me too....
What an amazing year! What a tragic year! What a sad & tear-filled year!! But, what a year of growth & self-realization. This sort of trial creates the perfect opportunity for deep personal growth.
I'm not the same man I was a year ago. God has been my unfaltering guide & merciful Friend. I'm more aware! I'm more in tune with the feelings of those around me. I can cry now over other's pain with them. I also truly despise the dark sides of me. I want victory over my weaknesses & will get them by God's grace.
I gotta agree that the worst part at times is the sense of being overwhelmed with "singleness". Just not enough hours. Not enough hands. Not enough expertise to DO ALL THE STUFF OF LIFE!!
I will forever admire a woman's role in life going forward. I was always respectful and appreciative, but NOW I ADMIRE & VALUE what women do in this world. Shopping for groceries. Sewing buttons on. Cleaning every nook & cranny of a huge house. Never-ending laundry. IRONING!!! MORE IRONING!!!! Creating menus & coming up with food all the dang time....
Whew!!
Anyway, what a year! I'm getting stronger too. I'm glad it's over. I'm so grateful to have survived by God's grace.

10 women for every guy!!! That's better than the old Jan and Dean song "Surf City". Surf City only had two girls for every guy.
I think sometimes the ratio seem unfair because meetng eligile people is hard. That is people of th right sex, age, not married, etc. And second, of those you meet who are eligible, many just aren't your type.

In my state...CS is decided on a percentage basis...like 17%.
You'd think that 17% of "rich" would be quite alot.

When it gets on down to the numbers it seems like a pretty long shot at times. Here's the variables I'm lookin at:
* Age range close enough to mine to work * Sex (I'm NOT a "switch hitter" ) * Divorced, Widowed, Single * Close by enough to work on a relationship * Same faith * Similar commitment to God * Likes kids * Educated similarly * Approximately the same economic strata * Looks are mutually attractive * Similar "style" in dressing - can mix with my world * No addictions (drugs, alchohol, smoking, etc) * Is mature to MB concepts for relationships
I guess the list could go on awhile....you get the idea. This makes things pretty darn limited. I'm spending a good amount of prayer energy asking for help from the One who knows best!

Yes, there are a ton of variables. And I am very picky. She must be breathing, bath regularly, have a job and be sober.
In reality, there are many great people out there. I find myself often thinking "How could any man have tossed this fine woman onto the trash heap of his life?" Hopefully, a few women are asking a similar question about me.
I think some of those statistics are skewed by the post retirement generation. Since we men die out faster, there is an imbalance after the age of 70 or so. And, let's face it, many men in their 50's and 60's are not much of a catch. I do know that in my area men on one of the Internet dating services outnumber women 1.5 to 1.
So, maybe the ladies aren't really that lucky that I am back in play after 25 years of being out of the game. [ December 30, 2004, 06:41 PM: Message edited by: JustinExplorer ]

He he...here's a headline for ya:
Peach going to the Apple! This will be huge...and I AM NOT GOING ALONE
Yea...I will tell you bout that but first..
As to both Justin and High Flight: I agree..dates must have respiration...breathing is nice. Sobriety is good too. Sometimes one can imagine the date is much better looking if there are more than one cocktail involved. Stay sober and remember if your date is cute or not.
I will add to the mix that they must be interesting. Not somebody that will sit there and just well...sit there. And you people know how I feel about the quintessential "turbo daters" lurking about out there. They are imho, frightening. And they drive fast too. Probably because they are trying to fit three women into one evening.
How was everybody's new year? Mine was good. Went to a party with the girls. Had fun. Went out with the party host on thurs. night. He is ok. Very nice...very ok. But my heart didn't skip one beat.
Back to the Peach/Apple part. Earlier this year, I had begun seeing briefly the cute financial planner/friend from college...not the hilltop neighbor mind you...but a guy that I knew in college. We had some joint friends from waaaay back, and t hings went well...until he had muddied his life up by telling me how he had gone to dinner with his ex fiancee...who comes to atlanta on business frequently.
Needless to say, I got scared, as under no circumstances would I date somebody who was less than honest and unable to be faithful. I prematurely dumped him but remained friends...that was when the xbf walked in the picture...the guy I worked with.
Anyhow, Mr.Swiss (what I will call the college guy/friend I knew) has come back into the picture. Background...he's from MS and grew up about 30 miles away from me. My sister, bro in law and best friends all went to UM and he did as well. He's really cute, nice, funny, and sharp. No kids, never married although he has a demanding and brassy x fiancee who is nothing like him...and thankfully he has shut her out for good. He's got a great job (works for swiss bank) and an mba. He actually reads. Yea, he reads books. He's a man's man though. Former college rugby player and not that terribly romantic though....at least that's what I thought.
He shows up yesterday at my house on football central day. He left his buddies' football party earlier to come to see me. Mind you what day it was ok? He is at the front door with a very nice bottle of chardonnay (my favorite) and a handful of flowers. On football day. He had called earlier to ask me if he could celebrate "game day" with me also. He doesn't talk much during games, but during the commercials, he held my hand and says this..."Peachy, I have really come to care for you. You know this. We've both had some time to think about things and I've known you for almost a year now. I want to see you more and think we could work towards something good. Something really good. That lasts. I think little peach is terriffic too and I want to be around him some more if you'd say it's ok. My company is sending me to NYC for two weeks and I am going to miss you alot. So here's something I would like to ask you...and I have been scared to do it but here goes...WILL YOU GO TO NYC WITH ME?"
I gulp. He says that he's going to get, should I decide to come, a nice suite with a great view. One with an extra room and "a door to shut" (my thing I would need for an overnight stay). But that he's really needed to spend more time with me and that he's worked so hard lately that he thought I deserved this. He says he'll have the entire weekend (three day) planned out. He's really familiar with NYC and that's good. We will go to a broadway show, to little italy for dinner, to more dinners, and to the met. museum of art and museum of nat. history. Also says he'll take me to central park, and shopping for "something special"...no guys..not something sparkly I don't believe.
He said that I've worked really hard and that he's watched me just do what I have to do. And then he said that he wanted to see just me period. Said that he'd wait to hear back from me on this.
Ok. I am kinda wierded out. I say that I need a bit of time. Football day draws nigh. He goes home. I go to sleep after doing laundry. Son is visiting the xh. I wake up and there's a text on my cell..."will you go to NYC with me?" Swissboy is definitely moving in the right direction.
I tell two of my girlfriends about this. They say this is "so very sleepless in seattle" of him. One is frightened he will try to ask me something. I don't think he will. I think he just wants to do this to get a committment. You gotta walk before you crawl btw. So I kinda pick a bit more. I talk to Swissboy and talk about "things". He says that he wants to work towards things being more permanent with me this year. And that maybe 05 will be my last year single period.
So I don't think he's going to ask me anything in NYC. But I think he is going to want to become "the boyfriend". The serious bf.
Now comes what do I want to do. All my girlfriends think I should go. I can have my own little room there in the suite. I have never been there. I do need to see if I can do all right for a longer time around Mr. Swiss. and yes, I have not been around a guy longer than eight hours since being around my xh.
I accepted his offer to go an hour ago btw. I told him how I was nervous. How I hadn't been around a guy for longer than 8 hours. How I was a bit scared in general. But he said that he just wants me to see how we can actually do things together and have fun. How he does care what I think about and how different he is from my xh. My xh btw...never took me to one museum. Just an aquarium. Never wanted to talk or learn anything new. Never wanted me to go back to school (anesthesia school). Mr. Swiss also says that "it's not normal for a girl to go so long without these things." That I have more than deserved the broadway plays, the nice dinners out, the romance, and the shopping. He said that "seeing how you are contended wtih your life as is has been huge to me. You're not a golddigger and you've been the most determined woman to me...to make it on your terms and do it for your son."
He said he was glad that I was going to go. Today we'll discuss flight plans and I will officially ask one day off of work tomorrow.
I haven't gone anywhere with a man in so long. What do I wear? What do I bring? Do I wear and bring sensible undies? How many outfits? How cold is it in NYC? What is wierd is actually going to breakfast with a man. Wow. That is wierd. And son will be at xh's.
I almost feel wayward. Like I am doing something wild.
However, I am a single girl who is going to get her "own door to close" even if it is in a suite. Swiss said "remember the movie 'touch of mink'?" He told me to remember how in the movie Doris Day had her own room and Cary grant had another room. But that it was all inside of one suite.
I wear scrubs every day. I can barely remember what it is like to go out to a fancy restaurant on a date...usually it's for a medical dinner or a continuing education thing. I can't remember when I was treated like this. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far away...I did go to fancy dinners and nice trips. I used to have nice jewelry and thought I had the perfect life. Except that person didn't talk to me, didn't care about me/my being and bettering myself or himself, and was all about controlling me. I am scared I guess b/c here's this guy who does want those things. Wants me to grow, wants to be my friend. And he's way darn cute too. No kids, no past. Great job, well educated. And a good kisser too.
Why am I scared? I swear I keep shooting myself in the foot. I want to have the life I should have had before. Maybe sometimes I think that I don't deserve it or that it cannot possibly exist.
But I am going. It's a done deal.
Any suggestions about NYC? I will arrive on saturday morning and leave monday evening late back to atlanta.
If any mb'ers are there, would love to see ya or have lunch! Plus you'd get to meet Mr. Swiss.

Dang you Peachy! This is great news!
You have got to write a book or something on how this is done. I am sure there are thousands of people who would like to know how to achieve this level of success with the opposite sex after divorce.
Now, I have to think about asking this woman I have been seeing frequently for a trip somewhere.
