My husband's high school buddy is planning to marry for the 2nd time next month. He was married the first time for 10 years, and has been living with his now-fiancee for the last 4-5 years.
The friend is non-religious (we're Catholic)- since this is the 2nd/3rd go-round, and they've been living-together for years with his 2 children and her 6 children....I don't imagine that they need household items. I don't feel friend would appreciate receiving a Bible or some other Christian-focused gift - as his first wife was very vocal about being a Christian and yet behaved in very contradictory ways leading to their eventual divorce.
He is 35, she is in her mid 40's. They have each been married before at least once, and he has two small kids from first marriage, and she has 6 children total, most are adults now. They've lived together for about 5 years.
Any ideas?

In Yogi Bear's voice - a pic-a-nic basket!
Find a really cool picnic basket, fill it with some neat stuff for a neat outdoor concert, dinner in the park. Bottle of wine (boozy or non), coordinated paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware.... one of those nice tablecloths that run about 7 bucks for the ground.....
I always like do it yourself gifts, they make memories....

That's funny!
I got them, I mean, the friend and his first wife a picnic basket for a wedding gift....a few months later I was visiting the wife, and she was in the process of wrapping THE PICNIC BASKET I GAVE THEM and "regifting" it for another friend who was getting married!!! She didn't have a clue that I was the one who'd given it to her!
It's a good idea nonetheless, especially with HNHN in it!!!

picture frame
the books
I know if I were marrying again, I could use bath towels. If they are living with 8 children, I bet they use a lot of them.
