I realize we are trying to reduce and police this sort of stuff...but I have stumbled across a few posts that reflect uncertainty about some terms:

If one were to go to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (point is you don't need "unabridged") and look-up the term "college try" one will find there a definition that for all intents and purposes most would find very flattering. Without resource in front of me, it goes something like this: college try...an over zealous attempt at something. Giving IT the BEST possible effort!

Now, when someone uses this term, directing the effort toward another, WE MUST BE AWARE OF THE ENTIRE CONTEXT BY WHICH THE TERM IS DERIVED!

For example: He gave it a college try, but she was not reciprocating or accepting of IT. Something to that effect! The emphasis here is not on college try, rather it focuses on the lack of response...
