I know there are some of you in the med field. I have a question my 24 year old has strep B and her first baby was born with a congenial birth defect in his heart. He had to have open heart surgery when he was 6 weeks old. He is fine now you would never have known it. She is pregnate again 6 weeks along. Is there anyway that this infection has anything to do with what happened to there sons heart. I read somewhere that theses kind of defects have 80% to do with the condition of the mothers health. They also had her on alot of meds trying to treat this all through her preg. How does this occur I never even heard of strep B. Any info will help. thanks flowerseed

Flowerseed,
Try going to parentsplace.com/pregnancy and clicking on the "complications" index. It has a whole lot of stuff about group B strep. I have gone there quite a bit during my pregnancy.
Tigger

You are probably getting all the info. you need from that website, but i had a discussion with my doctor about Strep B during my last pregnancy, which was just a few months ago. He said that they were going to run a strep b test because they do it for every pregnant lady. I asked why. He said that sometimes the Strep B bacteria is present in the vagina and that it doesn't mean that there is anything really wrong with the mother or with the baby, it just means that after the baby is born they will have to give it anitbiotics to prevent infection. Also sometimes they give the mother antibiotics before the birth. I don't know how they decide on exactly who gets the antibiotics and when. I asked if it could cause a birth defect - I was thinking about the fact that two of my previous boys had heart murmers -and he said no. He said its something to worry about only AFTER the birth, if it is present. Which in my case it wasn't. However, he did say that taking iboprofen in the last trimester can cause heart defects, which I did not know. I don't think that I ever took iboprofen in my last trimesters, but I can't say for absolute certainty. But I think I mostly stuck with Tylenol. so maybe the heart murmers were just one of those things. Hopefully they will outgrow it.
Anyway, that's the way it was explained to me. hope it helps.
-cd
[This message has been edited by cdcollins (edited March 02, 2001).]

cd,
I did learn more on it there. They had her on antibiotics right from the first time she went there thats what she dosent understand they didnt even wait on test results. This time which was today they did the test and are waiting. They had her on a IV with antibiotics in it when he was born. I went and was with her when baby was born that sure was something to be there. She told me just before he was born how sorry she was for ever being naughty when she was little. I thought that was so funny. She is one of these people that because a doc says something then it has to be right. Believes everything they tell her. She did say that they were sending her to aspecialist this time. Her doc told her that everyone carries this and that it doesnt go away. I just find that hard to believe. Its terrible to think she had to go thru this with her first she has never been a drinker, smoker, or did any drugs even when she wasnt preg. Thanks cd with love flowerseed
