Well, I was pretty unorthodox and sneaky because three weeks before OC was born, I spontaneously hopped on a jet and flew out to see the OW and made an unannounced visit. She was floored, stunned, caught off guard...it was a beautiful thing.
Anyway, after we sat and chatted for six hours, she was pretty comfortable with me by then as I was incredibly disarming, biting my tongue, smiling sweetly and not crying or getting angry at the things she told me and said to me. During the course of conversation I asked her what hospital she was going to go to. She was so relaxed, she blurted out "Mercy" and I could see the instantaneous regret in her face.
I went home and two weeks later, began calling "Mercy" every couple days and asking for patient information. One day I hit the jackpot and the info lady asked who I was and I said "a relative". She gave me the info; name and birthdate while I gushed "Oh, that's wonderful" as my eyes and nose were stinging with tears. So, my husband and I had the information almost immediately that ordinarily takes a few weeks through the courts, but it took lot's of phone calls and putting on a big show for the info lady. And the Oscar goes to...
Just call me "Auntie" Catnip =^^=
PS Gotta finish packing so we can leave late tonight

I'm always big on the telemarketer scam - which may be illegal, I don't know. Hypothetically, a person could call up and say she is conducting an survey on family trends of the decade. How many people in the family? Ages? Etc.
(I didn't find out about the baby being born this way, but thanks to a wily and persuasive friend of mine found out other important info about ow) You would be amazed at hhow much personal information an ow will give out to a total stranger on the phone.
Of course if you know what hospital the baby will be born in, calling up and asking for info on the mother - like Catnip did - would be a lot easier.
Hope that helps some. It must be really aggravating waiting to find out.
-cd

Jesse,
A good way to find out is to check for the vital statistics online. I think it depends on your state and county if the information is online or not, but the birth certificate is a public record. Just go to any one of the search engines and type in vital statistics/vital records. Good luck.
ps..the birth certificate will also tell if your H's name is on as father.

Jessie,
Some newspapers also post birth's as well as deaths. You may want to check that out as well.
Tigger

I saw the birth announcement in the local paper, but XOW had already emailed H. I like the above ideas.
BTW, H and I sent the required forms to vital statistics for a copy of the birth certificate, but got a form back saying he had to have the mother send written permission!!! Outrageous! We are assuming H is not listed as the father on it, but we don't know. The courts used the DNA to order ch-support.
