What many people don't realize is the "Twelve Steps" can be applied to EVERY aspect of our lives; not just AA where it originated.

They are a model to building a life with a solid foundation from which to achieve our heartfelt, committed goals.

To those who aren't familiar with the "Twelve Steps":

1. We admitted we were powerless over ____________ "fill in the blank here" that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to _____________ "fill in the blank" and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

With all credit and appreciation to AA World Services for providing the Twelve Steps.

Please take a look at YOUR situation, and if your heart is in the right place, the wisdom of steps will be apparent.

My only problem with the 12 steps is that it involves religion. What if you aren't a religious person?

I understand your concern and if you look at the wording, there is NO mention of religion.

"Power greater than ourselves" and " God as we understood Him" are COMPLETELY open to each person's interpretation. There's no mention or reference to Christianity, Islam, Judiasm, Zen,.....and so on with all other recognized, established religons.

It's what's in your heart; not what's in any building or doctrine.

If you don't believe in a "higher power", then, of course, the Twelve Steps are not for you. It's success are so remarkable; the results speak for themselves.

Hope this helps and you find the way that's right for you.

There is a difference between 'religion' and 'spirituality'. 95% of the population of the earth believe in God/Higher Power in some form or another.

If you are one of the 5%; then, there are many things designed to work for the majority that don't work well for the minority. I'm sure that there is something that will, though.
