Please, don't freak out, it's just for her appointment tomorrow morning to check out her eye. I have noticed about the last month, that her right eye seems to cross. When I asked the doc at her check up last week, she said it would be best to have a pediatric optimaligist check it out. It could be something as simple as the bridge of her nose is still fairly flat, and a little wide, causing an illusion of her crossing her eye, or it could be that she may have a problem. I will update when we get home after the appointment as to what the doc says.

Thanks for your prayers.

Will keep you in prayers. My younger sister, now 44 yrs old had eyes that crossed and with exercises and glasses at age 5 corrected the problem. Then my younger brother, now 42, was caught younger and again it was corrected with glasses and excercises. some need surgery, but I would bet yours will be simple to fix. In my family was hereditary weak muscle, only 2 out of 5 of us developed it. It has not shown up in the younger generations. Good luck

Adding an extra prayer for Abbi, as she and your entire family are already in my prayers!

When I saw this subject this morning my breath was caught short. Then when I read your post, a sigh of relief.

Hugs to Abbi and the rest of the family!

Drop us a line and update us on Abbi!

Tigger,
Will be thinking of Abbi. I am almost 50 and still have the crossed eyes. Had glasses from the age of 18months on. Only time it is noticible is when I get tired and my glasses are off.
It's good you are going to a specialist early to possibly correct any problems.

Ok, I'm back from the appointment, finally!!! The doctor was GREAT, but Abbi will need glasses. I guess that she is far sighted, and when that happens, the eyes work overtime to focus, which is what is causing her right eye to cross. Her right eye is the worse one. I think the biggest thing right now is keeping the glasses on her face, and not in pieces on the floor! That and figuring out how to pay for them before next payday! Oh well, we will figure something out.

Thank you all for your prayers, and if anything else major happens with her eyes(of course they have to tell you if the glasses or patch(second course of action) don't work, they may have to do surgery), I will let you all know!

Love,

Tigger

I am glad you liked the DR. that is always easier to deal witht hings when you feel the dr is doing what is best.

I cant remember how old abbi is, is she a baby? I know they make special glasses for little ones, I have two who wear glasses and one who wears contacts, SO i KNOW THE EXPENSE, Will insurance cover any of the expenses, WE dont have eye insurance, just medical. I just time everything so I dont have to buy them all at once.
Good luck on keeping them on her.. I am sure when she gets used to it, she will leave them alone.

Mo5,

Abbi will be 16 months in a couple weeks. The glasses are just an expense we weren't counting on. Very unexpected, and military doesn't cover eye's for dependants. The doctor suggested Walmart for a little less money. I also wear contacts, so we know the price as well. Not looking forward to it if she needs them the rest of her life! Oh well, that's life I guess.

tigger,

I just wanted to jump in and add that I too am glad the visit went well. I was in a similar situation with my son. He was born with Ptosis. It's a heriditary condition where the muscles in the eyelids do not develop completely and are quite weak. He had surgery at 4 and will probably have to have one last one when his face completely gets "full size".

Your family is in my prayers.

Z.

Tigger, You should be able to get a rubber band like atheletes wear when they wear glasses to keep them on her face. You might also look for a specialist as she gets older for some exercises she can do to strengthen those muscles. My 8 year old son suffers from similar problem, so far-sighted, he couldn't focus up close. With glasses he can now read with no problem.
My sister's eyes crossed, she had to watch "color TV", that was 2 sheets of clear-colored plastic that we put on the TV and matching inserts for her glasses. This somehow helped. So there are things that can be done to strengthen those muscles. You need to find a specialist who knows. Check with your school's special education department, or the district off-base. That might know someone.

Tigger,

If you or anyone in your family is a member at a wholesale club, glasses are much less expensive there, even less than Walmart. (a Costco or BJ's for example) The lens are about $30.00 each opposed to $75 and up with scratch guard. The frames are also about 1/2 to 1/3 the cost.

I wear glasses while performing certain tasks because my eye muscles are weaker than a normal persons, and I wear them when I am reading or at work on my computers. If I don't, my eye muscles work too hard to focus and at end of day, one eye will get alittle sore and eventually lazy. They call it astigmatism, (sp?) The bright side is that it is not a sight problem. Abbi can probably see fine without the glasses thank God, but her eye muscles work very hard to keep her eyes focused. I would recommend asking about corrective surgery when she is older if the glasses do not permanantly correct the lazy eye. I had surgery when I was 3 to tighten the muscles behind my eyes and it was successful in preventing a permanant lazy eye. That was how I was able to not have to wear glasses my whole life. Although, glasses back in the 70's when I was in grammer school were not quite as fashionable as they are now! I'm sure she will look like a little scholar in them!!

Very best wishes to little Abbi!

Tigger4jdt I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner!
Abbi will be so adorable in her glasses. Our neightbors son wore them as a baby, he was sooooo cute!
Our granddaughter wears sun specs to our pool and looks like a sweetie in them.
Prayers to you and Sailorman and the rest of the crew.
love
Debi

Thank you all for your support in this. We did call around to the different stores to be quoted prices before we got the perscription filled, and went with Costco and only spent $73. Of course, anywhere you go, unless it's a place like "Lens Crafters", you have to wait about 2 weeks. I am anxious to see how she responds to having them on her face.

Z,
I'd never heard about that, with the eyelids. Do other's in your family have the same problem, or does it just pop up every once in a while? I think I saw pics of you and the kids when Happygirl had that website set up, and I couldn't tell.

TG,
Abbi was sent to the Pediatric Opthalmologist, who does all kinds of things with kids! He was great, and everyone that I have talked to, in the waiting room, and around here, who have dealt with him, have nothing but good things to say! He said that we caught it pretty early, but we don't know what the full course of action will eventually be. Our biggest concern is our transfer in about 3 months to an area with no military base. I just hope that it doesn't end up costing us too much.

CM,
Abbi will have to wear her glasses full time, as she is far sighted, and that is what is causing her eye to cross. Basically, since her right eye is worse than the left, the brain doesn't try as hard to focus with it, and that's what causes it to cross. It isn't "lazy eye" because she does have muscle control over it, and it doesn't "wander". Also, my jaw just about hit the ground when I called Walmart and they quoted me $140 and up for the complete glasses, and when I asked for the breakdown, they quoted me $84 for the lenses! It's rediculously high, and Sailorman had to listen to me complain that the military doesn't cover eyeglasses for children! Especially in situations like these!

Gem,
I bet your granddaughter looks like a star in those sun glasses! I know that her grandma sure is a star, at least from where I'm standing Abbi did look cute when we were trying different frames on her, but she didn't like them on her face. Of course, they also just have the regular "clear" non-perscription lenses in them, and we are hoping that with the corrective lenses she will leave them on. I'll have to send out pics once she gets them. And thanks for the prayers.

Again, thanks for the prayers, support and advice! Now we just have to wait for the glasses to get here!

Love,

Tigger
