Well, I just got back from the Dr. for Abbi's second appointment. This one was to check to see if the glasses were working. Well, they are working for distance, her eye doesn't cross when she is looking at something in the distance, but it is still crossing up close. Now, we get to change her perscription to bi-focals! Luckily, most places, including where we got her glasses, will replace the lenses if the perscription is wrong w/in 3 months. Our biggest concern is her not having any glasses for 1-2 weeks while the new lenses are made. What we are going to try to do is keep these glasses, and see if they can just order the lenses and put them in at the shop, or if they have to send them out, we will keep this pair, order another pair with the correct bi-focal lenses, and then get these fixed. We were always going to get a second, back-up pair anyway, but were waiting till this appointment before we got them.

The doc said that if this doesn't work, if her eye is still crossing, they will start with patching. Unfortunately, that will be as far as he can take it, since we are transfering about 3 weeks after her next appointment! He is going to get us a copy of a list of Ped. Opthymoligists near where we are moving to.

Thank you to those of you who do keep us in prayer on a regular basis, and for those of you who pray when I post a request. I know that it is through the prayers that I have the strength to deal with glasses for a toddler, especially when most people would notice her beautiful eyes before she had her glasses, and now they see the glasses first. It is helping me not to be so vain about our child! But, besides that, she is doing wonderful with her glasses, since we bought one of those sport straps to keep them on her face!

Thanks again for your support!

Love,

Tigger

OH how I can relate to this:

quote:
especially when most people would notice her beautiful eyes before she had her glasses, and now they see the glasses first. It is helping me not to be so vain about our child!

We are of african american decent (my H is 100% - & I am 50% a.a. and 50% polish) My H has hazel eyes and my mother's family has blue or hazel eyes. So I guess our recessive genes took hold when I had my son because he was born with the most beautiful blue eyes.

Blue eyes for african american's are quite stunning and very rare. Well as I had posted before, my son had a condition called ptosis (droppy eyelids).

It killed me that he didn't get the full WOW impact when people first saw him. All they ever said was, "why is he so tired", "did he just wake up" or worse, "what's wrong with his eyes?"

now that he's had the surgery he gets that WOW impact. But it was tough when people only noticed the "defect" and not the good.

Every parent is proud of their children and takes special pride in hearing how adorable etc they are.

I guess the best part was those people who were polite enough to not comment about his eyes always had something nice to say, like complimenting him on his gorgeous blond hair, or how well behaved he was, or how tall he was for his age. Those people looked for the positive to comment on ... and overlooked anything that could be construed as negative.

But you know what ... those people with something nice to say are the people in general that I would consider friends. They are "the glass is half full" type people, and that's the type I want my family around!

Don't be ashamed of being proud of your baby. And trust me, the people that "want" to see great things in your baby ... will notice those gorgeous eyes!

I also can relate to this one, my youngest has Marcus Gunn Syndrome. She also has ptosis on one eyelid...
She went thru a period of having her eye patched and adapted quite well. She became my little pirate and if anyone commented on her patch she'd give them a big ol ARRGGHHHHHH.My baby was blessed with an outgoing spunky personality..I do believe I as her mother am and will be more vain about her appearance than she will ever be.

Abbi is a beautiful little girl. Glasses or no glasses.

There are many people that will notice her for the beauty behind the glasses, those that don't notice the beauty first are probably shallow insecure people.

Glad that the glasses are helping her distance sight... hopefully soon they will begin to straighten out the close-up stuff, too.

Give little Abbi a big hug from Lil Bit and me!
We miss chatting with you!!!

Tigger4jdt,
I'll continue prayers for Abbi. I hope someday soon people will say "She has the most BEAUTIFUL blue eyes!" After all, she does!

Aw, Tigger. I am so sorry you and Abbi are going through this. Sometimes the eyes get better with age and adjust themselves. Have any of the doctors suggested this could happen? I bet she does have beautiful eyes. Take some pictures of her without the glasses and carry them around with you,.....and hey! post them on the internet for the rest of us to see.

My daughter had to wear glasses from the time she was 7. Every evening she would come into the living room after doing her homework and sit crosslegged on the floor three feet from the TV. Poor kid was practiacally blind. She probably needed them as young as four but once discovered she wore glasses all the time and got contacts when she was 18. Now the world can see her spectacular green eyes...and she can see the world.

PS..I loved your comments on the other thread debating fathers' rights and choices. I concur, Tigger.

I will be praying for Abbi... One of my twins had to wear the patches for therapy. GOOD LUCK keeping them on--if your doctor recommends that. If he wasn't promptly snatching them off, his sister would rip them off FOR him!

Glad you worked out something for abbi's eyes. I have three children who where glasses and they love them. I guess they like to see. Older one is in contacts now, he says he cant be cool in glasses.

One day her glasses will be a memory and I am sure every one can still see her beautiful eyes.
