I have not posted on this board before. I post on the divorced/divorcing board but I have a question. The OW has filed a paternity suit against my stbxh. She is only a few months pregnant. Is there a paternity test that can be performed before the babies (she's having twins) are born?

I believe that it can be done with an amnio

Due to the risks involved, most doctors will not perform an amnio solely for the purpose of establishing paternity. If the pregnant woman is having an amnio for other health reasons, then the doctor can include DNA testing. Otherwise, the safest way is to wait until after the birth.

Thanks for your responses. The OW is over 40 so I would guess that would be high risk. I just can't figure out why she would file a paternity suit now. She lives with my stbxh and I have a feeling things are not going well to say the least. My stbxh and I have no contact so I am just speculating. Any thoughts as to why she would be filing a lawsuit now and not after the babies are born especially since they are living together?

It doesn’t make a whole heck of a lot of sense, does it? It is possible that they are having problems and/or OW does not foresee the relationship lasting. She may be maneuvering to ensure that she receives uninterrupted CS, should the “relationship” come apart at the seams. If she files BEFORE the birth, then she could collect CS from the date of birth forward. In addition, she would have good leverage to request that WS pay for part of the medical expenses.
Being 40, OW's doc will most likely do an amnio.

I am 5 months pregnant and I just had an amnio test done to determine the paternal father. I got the number to the lab from my doctor and called them and they set me up with an appointment and within 5 days of taking the test, we knew the results. The name of the lab is DNA Diagnostics. I have their 800 # if you want it. I had to go to a doctor's office to have the test done, then the dr's office sent it to the lab. It costs about $1,300 all together. If you wait until the babies are born, it only costs about $550. The test is almost painless. They told me the risk of miscarriage is .5%, but that is 1 in about 200 women miscarry. Seems kinda risky to me. But they say it's not very dangerous. I had it done about 3 weeks ago and I haven't had any problems with my pregnancy.
