Let's say for argument's sake that my H has come out of his fog and has decided to take some steps he needed to take long ago. What should we do first?

Who should we contact first in regards to paternity and child support? Should we get a test first and see for ourselves or should we go through an attorney for everything? Are there websites that are helpful? Is there an office we can call for advice?

I am really clueless.

If you go through the courts it is normally cheaper. I would say that it would make your husband look better taking the action before the xow. jmho

ExFrodo:

In our situation, we were too broke to pay for a $600 DNA test. The XOW didn't want to do it, so my H and I went to the Child Support Enforcement Agency for our state. We were told my H would only have to pay for the test, which was a lot cheaper, if my H was found to be the father. He was, of course, and the test only cost us $150. After the test, the agency helped us fill out the paperwork for child support and filed it with the court, so there weren't any extra expenses. Custody and visitation is completely different, and if your H and XOW can't agree you will be on your own.

Call your county Human Services Dept, or go to their website. They should have info. Be forewarned though, all of the paperwork is geared towards mothers going after "deadbeat dads", so the paperwork can be confusing and difficult to fill out at times.

Hugs,
AVNL
