My husband had an affair with on old girlfriend. He said it is over and he wants to work on our marriage but he continues to see this woman. He says they are just friends and they see each other in public. He says they have known each other since they were kids . I don't know what to do. I love my husband and want to stay married. How can i get him to realize that he has to stop talking to this women.

The good news is that he at least says that he wants to work on your marriage. I would suggest that both of you read the information on the Marriage Builders website and then also read the "Surviving an Affair" book and possibly others of the Harley books. This might start to convince your husband that "no contact" with the other woman is an absolute must for your marriage to survive and as a measure of respect for you.
Will he go to counseling? I think most counselors would support the "no contact" approach as well.
The important thing is to take some time and get some information and help before either of you make any decisions. Marriages can recover from an affair, but it takes commitment and time.
