[Originally posted in Cali's 4th of July party post]
All:
I usually do this in my mind every Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and 4th of July ... but, since we are all here:
John Tabert, Doc Halloway, Jesus Ramirez and all the others whom I did not know: on this day, I hope you know peace, and that your ultimate sacrifice is still remembered by myself and thousands like me. May God grant you eternal rest.
[Just a rememberance to why we have the freedoms we do. Our liberty has been paid for with the blood of patriots.]
(OK, now I've dated myself.
And to Dad and Uncle Herman and all the rest.
My Dad and Uncle Herman (not my real uncle, but my dad's best friend) were in the Philippines during WWII. They both survived the Battan Death March and several years in Japanese prison camps. My father died years later in service to our country. Uncle Herman died 2 years ago of old age.
Z
[This message has been edited by zorweb (edited July 04, 2001).]

My dad was a 1st Lieutenant and a veteran of the Normandy invasion. He was very special and I miss him. I think of him and all the men and women today that fought so bravely for our freedom.
All:
A bump to the top. Surely you all remember someone in your family, a neighbor, a friend who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom?
In that remembrance, it is a time to put it all in perspective: That there are men and women whose selfless duty secured our inalienable rights, including the freedom of speech we enjoy here.
This is a chance to give them their tribute. A tiny moment when we can step away from the pain of our human circumstance to remember those who will not now have the chance to experience the human condition, good or bad.
Godspeed,
STL

Although as a Canadian, I don't celebrate the 4th of July, I would like to pay tribute to my father. He was in the army in the second WW. He lost his left arm just below the shoulder and received shrapnel in his knee. Today he is in a wheelchair from the knee injury. Because he had head injuries at the time as well, he suffers from moments of dementia here and there.
He almost lost his life and thanks the Red Cross for saving it . He has been a continuous blood donor to them as a way of thanking them for his life.
