Hi,
I found this piece of 'light humor' and thought you might enjoy this. In this time of pain and suffering a little levity is usually good medicine. With that in mind, I would like to share......
A few deep thoughts
* A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where train stops. On my desk, I have a work station...
* If quitters never win, and winners never quit, what fool came up with "quit while you're ahead"?
* I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible whole lot more as they get older, then it dawned on me. They were cramming for their finals.
* I thought about how mothers feed their babies with little tiny spoons and forks, so I wonder what Chinese mothers use...Toothpicks?
* Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do...write to these men? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they delivered the mail?
* How much deeper would oceans be if sponges didn't live there?
* If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the OTHERS here for?
* Go ahead and take risks....just be sure that everything will turn out OK.
* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
* Ever wonder what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zigzag?
* Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
* How come you don't ever hear about gruntled employees? And who has been dissing them anyhow?
* Since light travels faster than sound, isn't that why people appear bright until you hear them speak?
* How come "abbreviated" is such a long word?
* If it's zero degrees outside today and it's supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold is it going to be?

L.

Hmmm, some of these have answers.
A bus station is where a bus starts. A train station is where a train starts. On my desk is a workstation...
what fool came up with "quit while you're ahead"? Well, ok, I give up.
Take away the sponges... If you squeeze them out, the ocean will remain approximately the same depth.
OTHERS are here to help YOU... Demand it!
Lightning would travel just as fast if it went straight, it would just get there quicker. Kinda like a guy going to a baseball game, as opposed to the grocery store.
Since light travels faster than sound, isn't that why people appear bright until you hear them speak? YES. I explain it this way in my physics class all the time.
How come "abbreviated" is such a long word? It has 5 syllables. It is the typical length for a 5 syllable word.
If it's zero degrees outside today and it's supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow, how cold is it going to be? Either -70F or -20C. Trust me, I calculate things for a living.

Jeffers
[ February 12, 2002: Message edited by: jeffers ]

Don't we have to convert the temperature to an absolute scale to figure this out?
If it's 0 degrees F, that's 459.7 degrees Rankine. If "twice as cold" equates to half again as cold, tomorrow it'll be 229.85 degrees R or -229.85 degrees F.
If it's 0 degrees C, that's 273.2 degrees Kelvin. Again, if "twice as cold" equates to half again as cold, tomorrow it'll be 136.6 degrees K or -136.6 degrees C.
Right?
WAT

Awhhh, come on Jeffers....this was suppose to be a lite thread. You have put an engineer's spin on this and now my head aches...... he he he LOL!!
Really the post office one about putting crimminals pictures on the stamps sounds like a viable idea.
Just jokin', L.

WAT,
Actually, I did consider absolute temperature first. However, that is a measure of "warmness", not "coldness." I figured that cold was normally thought to be a relative term. Especially in the sense of something being "colder".
Therefore I just dealt with temperature difference from what I consider to be "neutral" in terms of coldness- 70F or 20C.
So basically twice as cold is just doubling the termperature diff.
In fact, if you think in terms of heat capacity, where coldness might be a measure of how fast you lose heat, then just doubling the temperature difference is exactly the right thing to do.
I just didn't know whether we were talking Fahrenheit or Celsius, hence the two answers.
Of course, if we were talking 0 Kelvin we still have a quandry.
Isn't this fun? A question and answer that don't hurt!
Jeff

Orchid said: now my head aches......
I guess I have to take back my comment about this answer not "hurting". Jeffers
[ February 12, 2002: Message edited by: jeffers ]

Actually Orchid, this was very theraputic. I've been wondering if I'd lost the ability to think clearly.

Hey J,
I am glad. That is why I put this thread out there. Every so often we just have to step back out of our misery and laugh. It balances out our life.
I get stuff sent to me every day. Must be the crowd I choose to hang around with!!!?!?!?
I wouldn't trade them for the world. These people have the same silly sense of humor I want and need right now. Helps me keep my balance.
PBR doesn't have friends like that!!!! I believe she is stalking her next victim. Think I should out and APB?
LOOK OUT WILD PSCYO RABBIT ON THE LOOSE!!!!
