Thank you, thank you for mentioning the Prince of Tides. I kept meaning to come back to this thread and add that to my list since it is truly my all time favorite flick of LIFE.
If you haven't seen it, buy an entire box of kleenex before sitting down on the sofa. But, you will not only cry tears of sadness and grief and loss, but of triumph and joy and hope.
It is such a powerful story (and I actually loved the book by Pat Conroy even more), but the music is almost too much to bear.
I'll embarass myself enough to say that I was sobbing while the opening credits were still coming up - the music, the cinemantography, the scope of the film is that huge. It is bigger than a movie.
And, I loved "The Way We Were", sorry I don't remember who mentioned that one earlier. But, I cannot get through it without wracking sobs (and not just because of my current status - when I was 16 and saw it, I thought my heart would break). And I have always loved Robert Redford - I don't care how old he is or gets he is one of the sexiest men on the planet. But, just before the baby is born and they are at the beach house and she says to him, "Hubbel, wouldn't be lovely if we were old and we'd have survived all this?" And she adds, and "life were easy and uncomplicated". He says, "with you, it has never be easy or uncomplicated." And she says, "But it was lovely, wasn't it?" He says, "yes, it was lovely". OH, my GAWD. How can you not be a heap in corner over that scene!! And then they see each other on the street corner a few years later and they still feel it. They still love each other. Ok, enough of that.
Also, wanted to add a few more (not nearly as significant to me as P of T), but fun:
Bridget Jones Diary - Renae Zellweger is hilarious and Hugh Grant is pretty darn cute
A Simple Plan - if you can stomach Billy Bob Thornton, this is a real thinker
Notting Hill - Hmm, another Hugh Grant
Smokey and the Bandit - Jackie Gleason at his finest! "What we have here is failure to communicate!" and "Son, there ain't no way you couda come from my loins, the first thing Ima gonna do when I git home is punch your momma in the mouth!" Just funny - and my goodness how good did Burt Reynolds look 25 years ago - no wonder they sold so many Trans Am's with T-tops!
The Contender - Joan Allen is awesome as the VP nominee and if you like a movie with a twist - it is a doozie!
Ok, guess that is enough for now - for anyone that is still reading. Can you tell I love this thread??
