Do you think its reasonable to ask WH how he expects me to be in our relationship as separated parents with our son, and also to ask what would be his ideal in having contact with our son? I don't feel I've really ever asked him these questions and so we both seem to feel like the other is controlling. I have emailed these questions already and wait for a reply. Do you think I'll get one or should expect one?

Dancer, I cannot say that I am familar with your particular story. But i would like to respond to at least part of your post.
I do not think it is in any way unreasonable for you to want to know how to handle being parents for your son while you are seperated. This is definately a question your H shouldn't have any trouble discussing, at least in my opinion. Yes, it will be a hard discussion but one you both need to have for the sake of your son. You have to have a plan so he (your son) doesn't feel like he is being left hanging in the wind, so to speak.
You don't have to discuss the particulars of your relationship if that is what is making your H uncomfortable (although he will have to eventually). But you do need to discuss how to deal with your son together. You son needs to know who he will see and when and that he can't play one against the other. And should your H respond? I would have to say yes on this one. You are discussing your son. Why wouldn't your H want to come up with a good plan for the well being of your son? (Might be a rhetorical question?)
Try to keep the conversation as matter of fact as possible (easier said than done). Try to stay on subject (your son). Always try to remember that this conversation is for your sons sake. It is not outrageous for you to expect a response. IMO, it should be expected.
I don't know if I have been any help. Just giving my opinion here. I know things are very different when you aren't dealing with the particular situation. I have not been where you are. I would like to think that I could follow my own advice if my M were to get to this point. I wish you luck in dealing with this.
Regretting
