I read this sayin' uh-huh, uh-huh. Thought some of you might like it.
Jeffers
Are You Feeling Old? You Should Be - And Here's Why...
* The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1980. * They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era. * They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. * Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. * Their world has always included AIDS. * Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums and cassette audiotapes; they may have heard of an 8-track, but probably never actually seen (or heard) one. * The digital Disc was presented to Wall street when they were 1 year old. *
From their earliest years, a camera was something you used once and threw way. * As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents (and they don't have to lick them anymore) * Few, if any, have lived without an answering machine. * Few have used a TV set with only 13 channels. * Some use the word "clickers" for "remote control", yet they do not know why they say it. * They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony .. * The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. * You wore anything Izod, remember those windbreakers that folded up into a pouch you could wear around your waist. * You owned a Jordache anything, or you remember when Jordache jeans were cool. *
You remember LeFreak by Chic * In your grade 9 and 10 class pictures, you're wearing an Izod shirt with the collar "up." * "All-skate, change directions" means something to you. * In high school, you and all your friends discussed elaborate plans to get together again at the end of the century and play "1999" by Prince over and over again. * You rode in the back of the station wagon and you faced the cars behind you in the "tail gunner" position. * Schoolhouse Rock played a HUGE part in how you actually learned the English language. * You ever dressed to emulate a person you saw in either a Duran Duran,Madonna, Rick Springfield, or Cyndi Lauper video. * You actually know who Rick Springfield is. *
You're starting to believe (now that it wouldn't affect YOU) that maybe having the kids go to school year-round wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. * You ever wanted to be gagged with a spoon * You remember Bo and Luke Duke. * There was nothing strange about Bert n' Ernie living together. * Knickers and leg warmers were cool * You know what "gauchos" are * You learned to swim about the same time Jaws came out and still carry the emotional scars to this day. * You ever wanted to learn to play "Stairway to Heaven" on the guitar and choreographed "Dancing Queen" by yourself in your room. * You were afraid of the Sleestaks on Land of the Lost. * The first time you ever kissed someone was at a dance during "Crazy for You" by Madonna. *
You ever used the phrase "kiss mah grits" in conversation. * You had ringside seats for Luke and Laura's wedding * You know who shot J.R. * This rings a bell: "and my name, is Charlie. They work for me." * You ever had a Dorothy Hammill haircut * You sat with your friends on a Friday night and dialed "8-6-7-5-3-0-9" to see if Jenny would answer. * You owned a pair of Rainbow suspenders just like Mork used to wear. * You remember when your cable TV box had the three rows of numbers and you had to move the selector switch accordingly. *
You could sing "99 Red Balloons" in English and in German. * Feathered hair * Your jaw would ache by the time you finished those "brick-sized" packages of Bazooka gum. * The phrase "Where's the beef?" still doubles you over with laughter.

Regretting,
Ya know, I've had a lot of older friends (professors) and they always seemed so interesting. An endless supply of fascinating stories about their lives, people they've known, places they've been... I always felt I had nothing to add to the conversations, my life was so boring... except it's not. These kinds of lists just remind me how many interesting things I've done/been exposed to. I feel "older" now, but it's better, not the decline I thought it would be.
Justthewife,
"If you miss the bus I am not driving you so get moving. It's a long walk."
that is sooo... my mom. Our kids get chauffered everywhere so they don't understand the bus thing... or, walking 5 miles to bus stop... uphill... in 3 feet of snow.
Those huge bazooka bubble gum bricks were called "Big Wads".
Cali,
My first kids/kids will be coming through in about 10-15 years (at least the ones who were undergrads). We also tend to think of graduate students as our "kids", then when they become professors and have their own students they are the "grandkids"... that process goes faster. I'm not real productive with grad students (may be getting out of that business anyway) so I'll just have to wait for the undergrads.
Faith,
I see you! Faith1,
LOLOLOLOL.
I saw your post before you edited it and I didn't recognize the significance of those italicized things. I was going to comment that I had no idea what Rick Springfield actually did, but that I knew he seemed to be in lots of different stuff. HAHAHAHA.
All I know about GH is that Luke and Laura got married and then went on to flop as stars on their own.
Jeffers
P.S. Who'd a thought that these memories would be worth anything?
[ April 09, 2002: Message edited by: jeffers ]

Faith1
I guess that depends on how you look at it. Being a Rick Springfield fan is nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe a bit embarrassed, but not ashamed. I will actually admit that I saw him in Las Vegas last year. Yes, he's older but still very.....Well, let's just say not bad at all considering he's in his mid 50's and still in the "biz".
Just thought I'd let you know you aren't alone when it comes to being a fan from "some dude" from the 80's.
Regretting
