Of course, that fellow didn't get his beagle where I got mine! haha Mine are the neighborhood watchdogs, they bark if anyone walks onto our cul de sac and doG forbid they should come onto our porch, they get absolutely ferocious and I sure wouldn't try breaking in. I truly can't imagine a beagle not barking, although I'm sure my neighbors would love it.

Hi LuvMyDogs,
I hope it's okay I jump onto this thread. I have a question regarding doggies.
I plan on getting a dog, always loved them. I have three Siamese cats right now. I love kitties, too. Really all animals.
My question to you is what bred of dog do you suggest. I've explored going to the Humane Society and getting a mongrul or mutt, but I think I may want a purebred instead.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, have a big yard, will purchase a kennel, and I have owned/bred dogs before, German Shorthair Pointers.
I was thinking of either a Golden Retriever, Lab, German Shepard, maybe even a Dobbie.
Any suggestions???
Love, Jo
[ April 10, 2002: Message edited by: Resilient ]

How do people (esp people w/children) react around her when you're out in public?
Nikko,
I also just saw a news segment where some Insurance companies won't offer Home Owner's Ins to owners of what they refer to as "High Risk Canines". Premise is dogs like Rotts, Dobbies, Pit Bulls, even G. Shepards are considered high risk due to reported attacks on children. Did you see this news cast?
But this hasn't deterred me from wanting a Dobbie or a Shepard.
I just saw the coolest thing about a Dobbie, she was trained to sniff out humans (any part of the human body). They had a murder case where the H covered up his tracks from murdering his wife by painting the basement's floor (where he murdered her - how devious!) and the Dobbie sniffed the blood droppings even after being painted over. She was amazing!
And regarding your Sheltie .. maybe talk to WAT (Dave), he may need another doggie! lolololol!
Love, Jo
[ April 10, 2002: Message edited by: Resilient ]

I was thinking of either a Golden Retriever, Lab, German Shepard, maybe even a Dobbie.
quote:

Well Jo, I'm guessing you like bigger dogs and they are all lovely dogs. Personally I'm a beagle person, so that's generally my suggestion. But really, they are all great dogs, you just need to be careful if you're getting a purebred to get it from a responsible breeder, there are too many puppy mill operations out there who certainly aren't watching out for genetic problems like hip dysplasia. I wasn't careful with my little guy and he had parvo when we got him, fortunately not fatal.
I really like the humane society idea, they have a lot of purepred animals too. I just can't go in there because I know I wouldn't come out empty handed and two is enough for us now.

sorry for the delay in reply jo- i was away for 2 days.
on to the dobbie questions. she does shed a little. not much. she is huge so when people first see her they cross the street, actually run. but that is the point in owning one of these breeds isnt it? she is gentle as a lamb. highly trainable-too smart for their own good. excellent with children and great family pet.
the down side----obviously find a good breeder. you can even have them trained before you take them home. i highly reccomend this. it is an expense but worth every penny. this breed is needy for attention and love, be prepared to spend a lot of time luvin them. as far as health problems they are prone to something called wobblers disease. check the heritage of parents and ask breeder if they have had any cases. get it in writing. if you plan on breeding her/if its a girl, she will be prone to leaking of urine. it weakens the bladder for them. medication controlls this but is a pain. at the end of their life they sometimes get ocd. yes i said ocd. i have a dobbie on anti psychotic meds.(she and i take our anti-d's together.) they will sometimes get a "hot spot" and keep licking until raw and down to bone. this usually happens after 9yrs old.
cant really think of any other things, if i do ill let you know. they are great-i would recommend them to anyone who wants a true companion. mine will have a conversation with me, she yells at me and gives me the most joy in life sometimes. i love her to death.

want a real laugh riot- we at one point were on the same meds!!!!!!! only in my life-if i was to ever write a book-NO ONE would ever believe it. well maybe a few of you guys, but thats all!!
by the way, i saw that same show about the dobie. he was great, gotta love a dog that can do that. mine loves kids and when parents come to pick their kids up, she wont let parents near them without my ok. she is so great. i could go on forever with stories about her. sad part is she is comming to the end of her life, she has a few other medical problems too. she is one of my best friends.
i have also owned a chow. i love strong temperment dogs. his name was leo. i do not reccomend this breed for families. they are USUALLY, not all but most, one person dogs. and if you want a watchdog-this is the breed. they do not make a quick kill, they make it hurt. he saved my life when i was 19. i will always owe the world to that dog. he is in heaven with god now. 3 years----i miss him. i had him 15 yrs.

I have a friend who had 3 dobies, beautiful dogs, the one male was a champion. Anyways, she used to make these stuffed toys for them, just a long rectangle thing. One of them used to suck on his, just like a baby with a soother. It was the funniest thing, and if he caught you looking at him he would turn around so you couldn't see it. You could hear him sucking on it though, what a riot!
