Question from a very computer illiterate person. Today was the upteenth time I spent at least a half hour posting to have my post lost because I wasn't logged in. Of course I was logged in when I started the post otherwise there wouldn't have been a reply button to push.

This is my concern with doing all the downloading instructions. Several months ago our computer was a mess with a gazillion pop-ups and probably viruses. My 15 yr. old computer literate son I believe had to erase everything off the computer and then installed 2 programs to protect against viruses and pop-ups. The computer has been great ever since. The one glich is that we need to sign in through internet explorer, not SBC. Don't ask me why. DS said there is a good reason and I will believe him. My fear is if I do this download thing I will screw up the computer. He doesn't know about this MB site and he's the one we go to with our computer problems. So if I change things I'll have to tell him why. In other words I don't want anything to look differently when we sign on the internet.

Was I clear? Any suggestions? This site is driving me nutso. Thanks! CV

That should prove that there are still people out there that haven't found the new forum for the reasons you've stated as well as an old favorite or bookmark.

CV:
Mozilla Firefox is set up to receive far fewer pop-ups. Many of the programs that your son may have downloaded may still work woth Firefox.

It is worth trying the Mozilla Firefox download. It is just as easy to click on that icon as it is to click on IE and enter the internet. Most of us never have to re-log in here or lose our login at all any more. One less frustration.

Hi CV55.
Your message was VERY clear.

If I had to try and stay logged on or post a reply going through Internet Explorer, it would drive me NUTS also!

TRUST ME, it is 100% safe to download Mozilla Firefox.
And besides, if you changed your mind, you could easily go to the Control Programs, and remove the program.

When it is downloaded, an icon will be on the desktop for convenience along with the big E for Internet Explorer.
You just click on the Firefox icon when going to MB message board.
(I guess you could Delete the Icon and go through it a different way?)

YOU WILL BE SO GLAD YOU DOWNLOADED IT.

I have it in Bookmarks.
You can rename this Marriage site to say something boring, like some newspaper, if you don't want others to see this site in Bookmarks or Favorites. (There is a place to click on that says 'Rename' and you write whatever you want in that slot.

Since this is YOUR COMPUTER also, you could tell your son that you just wanted a BACKUP Internet source, in case IE was having technical problems.

Here again is the download address:
FREE Mozilla Firefox download

Sincrely, Julie <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

P.S. Since you don't want others to know you are going to this site, you need to go to Tools, Internet Options, and delete History, each time you are finished on the computer.

P.S.S. Edited to say I just noticed Trix's reply.
See, we are both telling you to go ahead and download it.
Oh, set it as 'default' after you have it downloaded.
You son will think you are SOOO computer Smart! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Okay, what about PALM browsers?

I use Blazer on the new Treo650 I got last week, and I get logged off whenever I click on something, even when I expire the cookies (sounds like a label stamped on some Chips Ahoy box at the grocery store!).

Thoughts?

[color:"mediumblue"]Thanks CSue.

Hi 2long.
I didn't reply yesterday because I was hoping someone would have the answer for you.

I know NOTHING about palm browsers.
Since they are 'cordless', I assume they go through
air waves and not something like Firefox or Internet Explorer?

Maybe ask for some advice at the computer place where you bought it.
Lots of the employees there are EXPERTS.~lol~

When this first started the only trouble I had was getting logged in at all! But, I had to type in my password exactly as it was given to me (capitals and lower case) and it worked!

So, I sported around for quite awhile with no problems. I was and have always used IE. Then I started getting logged off. Changed to mozilla (it was already on my computer as my 15 yr old computer guru has been insisting I use it on my computer) and that went real well. And then I started getting logged off. So, I would just close down and open a new window. That worked. For awhile.

Now if Mozilla logs me off I try IE and sometimes it does the same thing, sometimes it lets me play. Or vice versa, sometimes IE logs me off and mozilla lets me play. I just don't know from day to day.

Oh well. It is worth it so far.

[color:"purple"]Married and Lonely (that is a SAD ID.)

I have just a couple suggestions for you.

Go to 'My Home' right above these messages.

Click on 'Display Preferences' and to the right, click on 'Edit'

Then be sure that 'Default Display' mode is on FLAT MODE.

Also that 'Default View' is on COLLAPSED.

And below where it says 'Cookies', go ahead and delete them.

Then click on: 'SUBMIT'

Let us know if it was already set this way.
Oh, and is Mozilla set as 'default'?
That is important for it to work right.

Sincerely, Julie

I have been using Firefox since its release and had zero problems with it before the forum software change. After the software change I had the "URL not Found" problem in both IE and Firefox. Did all the temp, cache, cookie, history deletions as suggested to no avail and even tried creating a new member ID still no luck. Changed profile elements in both profiles and still the same problem.
Finally, totally frustrated I contacted Tempest and had the profile resubmitted at the administrative level.
So what ever downloading Firefox new did for you all is different than mine.
Could be a combination of browser elements and forum software interaction.

One more question. If I download whatever that was can we still use Internet Explorer to log in if we want to? Will it effect anything my son has doneto fix our computer. Apparently the software we purchased to protect our computer fits with IE. So will both IE and the other be functioning independently? Am I still be clearing because I'm confused? I'm afraid to download without DS's approval. CV

I downloaded Mozilla Firefox which works great with MB. I did, however, have to change my user name for it to be totally effective. I still have the option to log on with IE if I want to but hardly ever do. Firefox has cut all the pop-ups we were plagued with on IE. TT

[color:"navy"]'CV55', I wrote you a note about the SAFETY of downloading FIREFOX.
Go back to page 3. <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

'SM', I am sorry you are still having problems.
You are probably right that it is just something in your settings that needs changed. You did change the Default Display to the flat mode not threaded mode and also Default View to collapsed, didn't you?
(I had trouble even with Firefox until these were changed.)

'Tummy Tuck', I am glad Firefox is working GREAT for you.
I still click on IE for my emails, seems to work better!

Sincerely, Julie <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />[/color]

I tried downloading it, then DS came home. He said it wasn't downloading, and that it would screw up what we already have on our computer. He wanted to look at this site, but I can't allow that. So for now I guess I have to hope MB fixes this problem, unless there are other suggestions. CV

CV, did you try downloading netscape 7.2. It should be easy and go smoothly. It will NOT run with IE, it's another browswer like IE. But for safety sake you could use it (netscape 7.2) just for MB (which I'm sure is pretty darn safe) and access all other internet material with IE if you are concerned. IE will still be there, where it always has been on your desktop. At the end of every session on MB you can erase your "history" on netscape and nobody will know what websites you have been to.

P.S. I keep hearing some people are STILL having problems with mozilla/firefox. I have not heard any bad feedback from people who took the Netscape 7.2 route.

I put a link for Netscape on one of my posts to this thread.

Please remember - only 7.2 works (no earlier versions)

[color:"navy"]Hi Racer.
That is a really good idea that you have.

For those that have downloaded Mozilla Firefox and it is working GREAT and they are staying logged on, then keep it.

But for those that have downloaded it and are still having problems (I had to change mine to 'default' to make it work right) then go to the Control Panel, change or remove programs and take Firefox out.

Then download Netscape and see if it helps to stay logged on.
That address is up several posts, posted by Racer X.

Sincerely, Julie

P.S. I just downloaded Ad-Aware SE Personal.
My computer expert advised it.
It gets rid of little MINI PARASITES that might slow down our computers.
It is FREE. (I like FREE.)
I will get the address and post it here.

[color:"teal"][b]Hello MB Friends.
If anyone is reading this for the first time and still having problems being constantly logged off; go to the first post, as it will tell you what to do.

And as mentioned on a different thread, Mozilla Firefox is being downloaded like crazy....Over 45 million so far and more every minute....You don't have to worry AT ALL about downloading it. (That you might be doing something wrong.)

And keep Internet Explorer also...It is good to have TWO choices of how to you want to connect to the Internet. You will have two icons on your desktop to choose from when connecting.

And if for some reason you change your mind, all you have to do is go to the control panel and remove the program.
Real real easy to do.

well I was hoping when MB came back up today that we would have seen the end of the log off problems. So I logged in on IE. I was logged out about 2 minutes later when I tried to reply to a post. Back to Netscape. It's not a problem for me because i like Nescape better, but I'm concerned about newcomers.

Thanks Racer and BT. OK, if I download either one of those programs without my son's knowledge, will he even know? Right now we all have our own log in names. So will the icon magically appear on my desktop? Then will I have a choice how I want to log in, IE or the other? When I click on the icon will it then take me to SBC to log in, which is what happens when I click on IE now? As you can see I'm pretty computer illiterate. If the antivirus program we're using isn't compatable with the new program will we then be open to viruses? Then angry DS will want to kill me. OMG, I am just so tired of getting logged off this site. How come the old site didn't have this problem? I could be logged in for months. Well thanks for answering more of my stupid questions. Nice to not be talking about the dreaded As. CV
