Title says it all.

How do I go about finding a local marriage counselor, trained in the Harley, Marriage Builders, methods?

I placed numerous phone calls and interviewed by phone. My first phone call was to our insurance company with a request for approval for phone counseling with the Harley's. Unfortunately denied. I then asked them for a list of pre-insurance-approved counselors in our area. After being sent the list, which included their phone numbers, I started calling.

Each phone call was almost always answered by their answer machine. I left my name and phone number and requested a return call. When the counselor returned the call, I had my list of questions ready. I gave the counselor a VERY brief rundown on our situation and then asked my questions. I knew what I wanted in a counselor and didn't want to waste time making numerous appts to find out if this person fit the bill. I wanted someone (male or female) about our age or perhaps older (if THAT'S possible <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /> ), specializing in marriage and family relationships and familiar with the MB principles.

Remember that the Harley's do phone counseling and I understand it's excellent. If you are unable to take advantage of that, don't hesitate to call numerous counselors before you finally decide on one. Know what you want in your counselor and don't be afraid to question and interview. If you were rebuilding your home, you'd get lots of plans, opinions and estimates,,not settling for the first bid. You are going to be trusting this person with to help to rebuild and reconstruct your marriage. Make sure you and your spouse are both comfortable with your choice. If not, keep looking.

In addition to nerlycrzy's excellent suggestion, you can also call the MB office (888-639-1639) and ask for referrals for counselors in your area. I know at one time they used to do this, although I'm not sure that this is currently true. But even with a referral, I'd definitely still do the homework that nerlycrzy suggested.
