Yesterday there was a post here, and it has been removed (for good reason, I think), but one of the posters had a quote from a famous poem in their tag line. It was, I think, from a poem by Thoreau or Emerson. I have heard it only once before, and would like to find the entire poem.

A couple of lines in it were something like..

"Live well and laugh much (often?)

and talks about appreciating certain things, with one line saying something about little children, I think, and something else about planting a garden.

and then ends with something about

"knowing that the world is a better place, because you were in it."

I know this isn't much information, but I hope someone here is familiar with this piece, or perhaps was the poster who included it in their tag line.

Thanks for your help.

SM,

To laugh often and love much;
to win the respect of intelligent persons
and the affection of children;
to find the best in others;
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived...
this is to have succeeded.

Thanks to NC (Nerlycrzy) for the help. Here's the entire poem, for any who are interested.

To laugh often and love much;
to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children;
to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to give of one's self;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived -
this is to have succeeded.

while mr. emerson is rather wise...

I myself prefer Norm from cheers...

quoted as saying...

"It's a dog-eat-dog world...
and I'm wearing milk bone underwear."
