Spent the past hour putting Santa gifts together in the garage. They are now stashed safely under the tree. S_ and DS are snuggling in our bed, sound asleep.

I am listening to Christmas music and sipping hot green tea. Imagining DS’s look when he sees the 210 million year old piece of sandstone with Megalon teeth in it that Santa brought him. And the new three-stage rocket he has wanted since last summer when the one he spent two weeks building flew so high the wind took it a mile away and we never saw it again.

DS is too old for Santa, according to him. But he has fun pretending. Lots of fun. He spent an hour wrapping a present for S_ and then packed a big oversize stocking with all kinds of little stuff for her he picked out himself during ten different shopping trips. He hammered a nail in the mantle and hung it himself before going to bed.

He remembers last Christmas. It was just the two of us in an almost empty house. S_ had moved out just four days before. The tree had fallen over like an eerie omen and broken most of the ornaments. Both of us were very sad and scared. S_ was too, I now know.

All three of us were crying ourselves to sleep this time last year.

The best Christmas present I have even received from him is his smiling face tonight.

And S_ gave me a wonderful Christmas present of sorts. Yesterday she handed me the watercolor OMM painted for her years ago. She said I should burn it or rip it up. I thought that was too dramatic so I just tossed it in the tub skid for non-recyclable scrap paper in her office building.

It may or may not mean much to her, but I officially give her an MB F tonight. She is now FWW.

That nail hole is going to be special for as long as we live in this house.

Merry Christmas to everyone.
