What the hell do we care about nurses for?

It is the doctors who matter.

Hey nurse get me a cup of coffee?

Nurse crazyride here,
Thanks for the recognition. We nurses appreciate it. Hey, lemonman, get your own dang coffee, while you're at it bring me one too! Ha Ha. LOL. Never had a doctor bring me coffee before. We have a very nice lady oncologist that buys our lunch fairly often. She's our favorite doc.

This reminds me of a story when I was a senior resident. I was in the ER one night admitting an old lady with abdominal pain. I was going over the orders that the intern wrote, and he writes as one of the orders:

"Disimpact patient tonight".

Now mind you, this patient was going to a med/surg floor probably to a nurse who had to take care of 8 patients.

I started chuckling to myeslf and him, and I go "son, you haven't the slightest f-ing idea what career suicide you are submitting to if you send up these orders".

He got the point real quick.

Nurses are the backbone of any hospital. Anyone in health care knows this. It was the nurses who taught me how to treat SICU and ICU patients. It was the nurses who told me how to write for dopamine, or "let me think" I knew what to do with someone who was crashing. Thank God for the patients that they were there.

Hail to the nurses during this week and forever.

LM,

Ah, memories...

20 years ago, the MICU, a 75 y/o APE-er rolls in. The interns sidles up to me and whispers, "So, what do I do for APE?" I, without batting an eyelash, whisper back, "Lasix, Morphine, Oxygen." Saved his backside that day.

How about this one:

2 AM. CICU. Full code running. Pt. saved. The Chief resident steps back and says, (all full of himself), "I saved him." Nurse shoots back, "No, Doctor, God saved him. He just let you - and the rest of us - help."

And, while we are at this, let's give a pat on the back to the advanced practice gals (and guys) -

the NPs (nurse practitioners),
the CNSs (clinical nurse specialists),
the CNMs (certified nurse midwives),
and the CRNAs (certified registered nurse anesthetists).

APRNs rock!!!

I join the salute! Not only to nurses but to the nurse's aids who do the grunt work at the nursing homes. Now that's a thankless and depressing job - with little pay. I thank you all for your care and hard work!

As an aside...

The last time I was in the hospital, my #1 nurse was a former policeman. It seems more and more guys are getting into nursing.

So when my bro was out of work a couple of years ago, he asked me if he should go back to college and become a computer guy. I told him, "the truth is, as an over-40 guy, I wouldn't recommend it. You're not cut out to sit in a windowless office or a cube and push bits around all day. You're a people person. Why don't you go to nursing school instead?" He thought I was joking.

So, he was sitting in the unemployment office filling out forms. There were two tough-looking guys there who had been laid off from a tire factory - after 20 years on the line making tires. My bro was chatting with them and told them "My crazy brother suggested that I study to be a nurse." They looked at each other and said "we're both in nursing school."

My bro is a very giving and caring guy, and he's very rule-oriented and pretty good at following procedures. I think he could have done it, but he's working retail now.

Susan ... thanks for this.

Yes, I am an RNP ... however, Susan functioned as my caregiver (sorta) when we were in Jackson ... I got a nasty corneal abrasion and conjunctivitis. (body glitter and contact lenses and knock-you-nekked margarita's ... not a good combination)

Susan 'operated' on my eye and did a fancy job of creating a temporary artificial eye. (I was wearing an eye patch that Susan embelished ... resulting in one freaked-out hotel cleaning lady ! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> )

So Susan ... thanks for the virtual hug on this thread .... and the artifical eye I will never forget.

This reminded me of one nightmare code we did in the clinic parking lot years ago. When all was over but the cleaning up, I leaned in to the clinic medical director and whispered ... "Nice work. Your fly is open."
