I'm just going to preface all this by saying I have had experiences that left a really sour taste in my mouth for military counselors. However, that was for my own individual counseling, and I'm hoping I just got a bad apple. I know H and I are going to probably *need* some cousneling to get past some of the hurdles in our recovery, but we're going to be in Germany pretty soon and our options are going to be limited. For those of you who have used the counselors (either chaplains or otherwise) in the military, what have been your experiences?

CamoKnightsWife - I have never seen a military counselor, but we are military. I don't know anything about Germany or what kind of insurance you have over there, but where I am I would be champused out to a civilian counselor. We are not at a base so we actually have Tricare here so every specialty thing is refered out to a civilian. Maybe that can happen to you...get a referral and see a professional.

My WH will not go to a counselor so you are lucky you are in recovery!

Best of luck!

We saw a military counselor. Neither of us were happy about it at all. I can't even describe what it was about him. It was kinda like, well get over it.

Never saw a military counselor, but my IC is a VA counselor and she is excellent. Which, is extremely surprising considering the reputation the VA has!! I would recommend scheduling an appointment with the psych clinic for marriage counseling, then ask them for a Tri-Care referral. Who knows, maybe you will be able to get into counseling with the Harley's??

My H and I went thru counseling 13 years ago at Ft. knox.
I felt that our experience was good. The information stayed there, didn't go back to the command. The counselor saw us both together and individualally. He did refer my H to a psychologist because he felt H needed it. He was pro-marriage and very supportive.
Where in Ger will you be?

Thanks, all, for your input. The experience I had with a military counselor in the past was pretty much like what better_than_ever's was....here, pop a pill, forget all your worries. Yeah, whatever. There isn't a pill on EARTH that will help me forget this. Ok, well, maybe forget, but not move past it.
Lost, from what I remember about being in Germany (second tour for us), they pretty much send you to bigger bases with bigger medical facilities if you can't get care adequate to your sitch at your duty station. So basically if we can't get what we need where we're going, we may end up traveling as far as Ramstein. Fun...
Texasgirl, I'm glad your experience was good. Gives me a little hope. I'm not so much worried about discretion, but rather intensity and thoroughness (is that a word?). Sorry, I really don't want to say where we're going in Germany. FOW's H is stationed over there and he, um....really doesn't need to know where we're going to be. Yep, he can find out rather easily, we both know that, but I'm not going to help him! LOL And yes, he's on the MB boards too. Hi, M!

Feeling slightly better about this possibility. Anyone have any experience with chaplains? How does that type of counseling compare to the "medical" side of it?
