Galveston, right on the beach, is exactly where AJ was for 5 days before the efforts to repatriate all the New Orleanian refugees into temporary housing close to home were cancelled due to Rita, and thus his job was postponed.
I am glad he is out of harm's way, at least for the moment, but he is very distressed because Galveston is so beautiful. We saw a projection on the weather channel this morning that showed what 19' of flooding would do to the island, and there was just a teeny little bit left above water.

Just call me Mel's Motel 8! <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> I spoke to my brother in Houston last night and he said "mother called and gave me my evacuation plans." Oh yeah? "She told me to go to Mel's." She also told him to leave everything but take the computer, lol.
He is still sitting there in his house waiting to be FORCED out. Guess I should go get some food for him!

Is it Mississippi that uses magic markers iin their manditory evacuations? When people refuse to leave authorities give them a magin marker and ask them to write their social security number all of their body parts so they can identify them after the storm.
I guess it is a very effective program.

p.s we already shut down and evacuated our unnamed <img src="/ubbt/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> soft drink plants down in Beaumont, Lake Charles and Houston. And our customers are fighting over our remaining water. I sold 15,000 cases of water on the phone Monday evening to my grocery chain, which we delivered to south Texas stores Tues and Wed. Should be interesting!

My best friend and her husband are currently entertaining both sides of their families. That's 2 sisters (plus spouses and kids) and 2 brothers (spouses and kids) plus her father who already lives with them...in a 3 bedroom house!! Egawds!!!

I like cats!
My family is spread between Houston and Galveston, and they've been evacuating all day. About a dozen cats and dogs between them! Too bad they're so anti-social that no one is offering to take them in (think Al & Peg Bundy, but drunker). They finally found a distant relative near Dallas to take them in. They are worried that everyone gave all their money to Katrina victems, and that they wont get any... (they call to tell me this... shoot me)
One sect is helping to re-evacuate Katrina evacuaee's! What a mess. We were supposed to visit (the good sect) this weekend, but have canceled our trip.

Druscilla, where exactly does your family live -- you had said between Galveston & Houston. We live right there, too, in Galveston County, about 25 miles from G'ston. It is so bizarre seeing our city's evacuation plans listed on all of the National Weather and News channels!!
According to all of the computer models, my house is going under from storm surge. It also did for Alicia, which was a Cat 3, in '83.
Rita's already been upgraded to a 5 and so we are pretty much expecting it to flood. I am going around, making sure all of our belongings that can be are at least a few feet off of the ground, and taking pictures of them. Ouch.
We're leaving tonight for Dallas.
