Dorry,

There is transportation to SF from Santa Clara IF you want to go and sightsee. There are museums there, and there is San Jose right next to it which is a sizable city (3-4 times the population of SF). I am not certain but I also think you can get transportation to Santa Cruz on the coast. It has beaches, a boardwalk, stuff like that.

I also think you can probably get to a winery or two from Santa Clara as well. So go on Santa Clara's website or the hotel website and see what you can find. I know there is a commuter train that runs from down there to SF and it is reasonably fast.

The weather is supposed to be good next week, cooling off, but that means 60-70's which just might feel like a heat wave to you.

Sorry I could not offer more information. I think there are some on here from closer to there that can help you.

God Bless,

JL

Mr. Pep is in Santa Clara this week .... but his Momma is having surgery tomorrow .... so he's busy.

Santana Row ... neat shopping & dining & lookey-loo-ing

just across the street is:

Winchester Mystery House ... pretty kewl ... do a google search

there is Santa Clara University .... kinda dull but historic

downtown San Jose is the children's discovery museum ... it is actually pretty neat .... it is located on Woz Way ..... know why?

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is way kewl

LOL it is a heat wave - first snow up here happens before halloween...

70's are our average summer...with peaks into the 80's

Right now we are in the 50's as daytime highs...low 50's...

I was there - that's the conference center sprint will be at -but sometimes I like to know other people's opinions on where to go rather than a website in case it sucks...hehehe - will have to see the public transportations - I do like museums - and hve to stick to budget - don't have too much spending money

Egyptian Museum sounds very cool

And thanks for the CNN plug hehehehe

Oh Good Grief!

Mel is playing tourguide in CA. Of course she should be able to tell you abit about Luchenbach and the chilli cook off. Or perhaps about the Riverwalk in San Antonio, or...

Mel, you have not LIVED until you feel the Earth move beneath your feet...while you are NOT with your H.

Dory, have a good time, there is a lot to do.

It's a gorgeous time to go to the Bay Area. You may get a little rain but not much. There's tons of stuff to do. Santa Clara is part of an enormous, sprawling megacity. It's easier to have a car. Just don't drive during rush hour or try to get to Santa Cruz midday on the weekend. I love Santa Cruz. Go a little farther south and you can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

You can take BART, the train system into San Francisco. Personally, I'd stay away from Fisherman's Wharf. Golden Gate Park is wonderful. It's beautiful to walk in and there's the Steinhart Aquarium and the De Young Museum of Oriental Art. Go to nearby Noriega St for some cheap and good Asian food. YOu can check out Haight-Asbury if you're an old hippie or wannabe. Maybe you could even book a winetasting tour through your hotel. Napa and Sonoma are not very far away.

If all else fails, have Mr. Dorry drop you at one of the mails. There's world class shopping all over the place.

Grapes are versatile. Grapes can be sour, sweet, sublime as wine and fabulous even when old and dried out.

Mr. Dorry wont have a car either...going straight to conferences - I think the hotel we are staying at is blocks away from the conference center - but I have no clue yet - find out all that tomorrow.

Wont be renting a car...but hoping a few friends I know in the area will drive in for a day to see me One I have known for 6 years and never met her in person!!! So waiting to hear from her.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go on a wine tasting tour - but once again - not sure how I would get there - and also - since I will be touring alone with my camera (I love photography) I dont want to venture tooo far....lol

Actually Dorry,

If you can get to Fremont from Santa Clara which is not far, you can get on BART and go into SF or a lot of other places. BART is the "rapid" transit system out here. So examine your options, there are quite a few.

p.s. Don't let these folks get you worried about earthquakes. Yes, they happen. Yes, they are scary. I'll take an earthquake over a tornado or a hurricane. I've been in a couple of big quakes and it's usually over with quickly.

There is no better place in the world to be during an earthquake than California. The building standards make it one of the safest places to be. Hey, if it hasn't fallen down already, it probably won't.

There's really mummies at the Egyptian museum....

I'm with JL. See if you can get to Fremont. WH and I stayed there a couple years ago, and took Bart to ChinaTown, Fisherman's wharf, and all over the whole city. It was fast and easy.

Don't worry about faults and quakes. If you can't go to SF, take a stroll down Santana Row. It is an open air shopping center, then across the street is the Valley Fair shopping Center. If you do go and eat.....go to the Cheesecake Factory. A little pricey but if you only go have dessert it w/b worth it. YUM!!! Meal servings are huge. I used to love the Jack Daniels Chocolate Cheesecake but I don't believe they serve it any more. The pumkin one is good. They should have over 30 kinds of cheesecake to choose from plus other delicious desserts. Food is good also.

There are wineries near Santa Clara. Paul Masson Winery is nearby in the Saratoga area. The museums are also close by. There is a bus system but better to get a cab.

Not sure if Redhat w/b around then. Santa Clara is next to where I used to live. Wish I was there to meet you.

You will have a nice time. If you are bringing the kids, Great Americal might be open on the weekends.

If you do get to San Francisco, the Exploratium in the Golden Gate Park is fun for the kids. The Discovery Museum in San Jose is good for kids. If you travel up the bay on the pensinsula side (same side as Santa Clara and San Francisco), there is also the Stanford shopping center. Kinda uppity but has good markets attached to the shopping center.

If you make it over to Monterey and Carmel, there's the Monterey Bay Aquarium that's good. Take a ride on the 17 mile drive on the coast and you may run into a few stars on Pebble Beach's golf course. More stores there as well.

Santa Cruz is located south west of Santa Clara about 30 miles due south/west. There is a place called the Mystery Spot along the way. Something weird about the megnetic force distorting one's balance and vision. It was trippin' fun. LOL!!!

Hope you meant Santa Clara CA and not someplace like Mexico. LOL!!!

L.
